View Full Version : Lighthouse spiral
Or is it a helix? Whatever the correct name spiral staircases are good to photograph, as long as you don't get vertigo!

Welcome back Tony, nice composition and colours! Did'nt know about the reason for the clockwise rotation of medieval staircases, nice story!
Thanks for sharing.
Good to have you back, Tony. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Wales and the weather was good enough for cycling.
Very good and interesting shot. Same goes for the story.
Luc
Thanks Luke. The shot was handheld, braced against the rails, and the best of three taken. When I took the shot I worried about the mixture of artificial light and natural light, but the colours they both contribute seem to make the shot better. Wales and cycling? Both wonderful, though my wife felt a five hour ride was too much on the first day!

Well you have returned with a "bang" that is for sure. What a well executed concept. If I may be so bold, did you try cropping it square ??
Now I can get back to my normal day waiting for the latest TB2 contribution.
Actually Garry, my first thought was to crop, not square, but to remove some of the left and right. But when I did I was less satisfied than with the original shot. I didn't like losing way the stairs on the left lead you into the composition. I don't know about you, but when I'm shooting multiple shots of static subjects 8 times out of 10 the composition of the first shot I take is the one I like best. Thanks for your comments.

Your blog is always informative as well as being pleasing to the eye. I like this shot for the colors, form, and the organic look that you mentioned in your article.
I'm "spacially challenged," and it took a long time for my brain to process one part of the image--the dark rib-like things on the right-hand side and bottom. I finally figured out that they are rails, but now I'm thinking that you must have hung over the edge quite a bit to get this shot?!? :nailbiting: Or is it just the wide-angle effect?
You're right, I did have to lean out a lot, mainly to avoid including my feet in the shot! Heights don't bother me much, but I did get a bit concerned when I saw the cast iron hoops on the outside of the light, 90 feet above the rock, and 190 feet above the sea, that the keepers would hold on to as they cleaned the glass!
