Some Marines we encountered during our recent visit. All shot with the E330 and ZD50-200 hand held.

First is some color from the graduating platoons on their final three mile morning run.

I didn't notice the sign in this one until later, but it is lends an appropriate title since there is no resting on the laurels in this place. As for the gentleman in the foreground, I don't know if he is wishful... or thankful

Here are some boots in the early stages of training. Note the drill seargent.

Same boots from a different perspective. Note the ever present steam pipes in the background.

And one of my favorites: Mom and Her Marine...

Mike,

Never seen "boots" doing drill with M16s before. Yes I did note the Drill Sergeant. Looks like he like he is enjoying his job.

Henk,
The minimum age is 18, or 17 with parental permission.

Very nice shots! They bring back lots of memories. I confess that I am a relic of a former era. I went to Navy boot camp at the Recruit Training Center in San Diego in 1974, separated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD, Marine boot camp) only by a chain link fence. We used to get up in the morning at oh-dark-thirty and the Marines were already out running. We'd break for lunch at the galley, and the Marines were running. We'd hit the rack at night, and the Marines were STILL out running!

I was glad I wasn't a Marine! :D And for those of you who ARE "Former Marines", you have my respect.

Thank you, Roger! Having known a few, especially one that was a good high school friend, I have always had a healthy respect for a Marine. But this visit seemed to amplify that.

This whole little series is evoking some traumatic memories . . . ;^)

I went through PI in '89, and we certainly drilled with our M-16s. We had them with us pretty much 24/7, anywhere except in the messhall or chapel.

Another thing I remember is how much trouble you would find yourself in if you referred to these guys as "Drill Sergeants." In the Marine Corps, they're referred to as "Drill Instructors." The Army refers to their recruit trainers drill sergeants, and the one thing any Marine hates is to be compared with anything having to do with the Army!

Excellent shots!

I went through in '89, and haven't been back since. What sort of red tape do you have to cut through (or who do you have to know/bribe) in this era of heightened security to get on base?

Thank you, Kevin! We had a pass through a Marine that graduated.
