We decided to stay for all three days of coursing. I had originally only registered for Friday and Saturday. Friday was BITTER cold, with a wind that went to the bone. Saturday was nicer and rather pleasant. Sunday, was a drizzling rain, though, honestly, more tolerable than Friday!

I shot these at 1600 ISO, f3.5 and still could only get to 1/640th of a second! That is mid day too. I don't think we always realize how low light can be mid day

The E-3 handles noise at 1600 ISO better than my E-1 did at 400. I could print these straight out of the camera, with no fiddling

Riley was fighting so hard to be released, he knocked Cathy off the ground!

These are on Saturday and at 200 ISO. I just had to share them!

Good shots at 1600 ISO indeed! Were you using any in-camera noise filter? I was just fiddling with the High setting (along with resetting Sharpening to +1) and the results weren't too bad, although I know it's heresy to say so. I'm also concluding that I can live without the SWD lenses for now, as I can keep up with my dogs using CAF and the regular (50-200 etc.) lenses. Thanks for the great shots.

I was using the standard setting for noise filtering and 0 sharpening. I never add sharpening in camera as it tends to add noise.

I did set the contrast to 0, which I usually have it at -1. In the rain, I needed a bit more contrast

Julie judging from your shots I'm really going to enjoy the E-3 when it arrives. I try to shoot action on many overcast days and I sure won't complain with ISO 1600 shots like these.

Those look totally amazing, as always. I love the one of Dot flying through the air. Congratulations on her championship!!!

I've been sick and haven't had a chance to get outside and try out my E-3. I felt sorry for my dogs, who have been pent up with me all week, so I took them to the dog park for about 20 minutes near sundown (which is at 4:00 here!). I shot with the 50-200. As I was shooting, I was thinking, "Man, this AF is killer!" Then when I got on the computer I had maybe 6 barely usable shots and over 250 totally awful ones (I was trying to see if the AF could get sequences in low light, so I was machine-gunning it). I had to go from ISO 1250 to 3200 in the space of 15 minutes, so it was probably too dark, but I have the feeling I have had much better luck with the 510 and 40-150 in similar light!

Anyway, your results give me hope. I'll just have to go try again when I'm feeling better.

Julie (K): I had a similar experience on my first try at CAF with the E-3 using the highly technical "running dogs" test criteria. There is definitely a learning curve to this new camera. I ultimately went with using the "cross" auto focus mode and a higher ISO than I wanted (800), but the keeper rate improved, at least with regard to focus. Of course the dogs didn't cooperate, they insisted on having goofy expressions while being photo'ed--you know tongues lolling, slobbering, etc., so I don't have any shots worth posting, like Julie Poole.

What I have done is use the center AF only. It helped a lot when it comes to fast dogs. I have to play around with it some more

Hmm. I used center point only for most of mine, then switched to all points toward the end, but neither setting worked. My 50-200 hunted a lot even indoors, more than I would expect it to on the E-3. Maybe I'll have to think about getting it serviced.

Julie, I saw your review over at NWP it was great, really some seriously sharp captures also, you must be thrilled. I was wondering about the breed near the bottom in two shots that is wire haired as I have never seen one before.

I believe those were scottish deerhounds. Unless I am right to them, I have a tendency to mix up the deerhounds and th wolfhounds. Wolfhounds are much larger. Both breeds do lure course though.

I do think the ones in Columbia were deerhounds(pictured in the article) and the ones in GA were Wolfhounds.
