New years eve surf

It's not very hot round these parts on New Years Eve, and the North Sea is freezing even on hot days. You've got to admire these guys, there were scores of them:

The shots I took looked very noisy to me, but I don't think I nailed the exposure really.

That's really powerful - living color that's nearly black and white; it sets a rather somber tone. As for the surfers, they personify dedication.

This reminds me of Alex a muscovite my age who comes down to the park for a swim in Puget Sound in the middle of the winter. I asked the marine biologist -- who works down there and makes his students wear thermal suits when they go out in boats -- how long someone can survive in Puget Sound without a thermal suit. He said about 30 minutes.
