49 entries quite a showing!!

Hi Tony,

The whole gallery is here. (http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/2769575#147401977)
49 entries quite a showing!!

that's a great effort to get those up on a smugmug gallery!

I tried the "slideshow" option but it seems like the images are cropped in the lower edge due to the presence of the myfourthirds masthead. Maybe that could be omitted?

Thanks for your, and all other behind-the-scene guys, great work in arranging this!

Cheers, Jens.

It doesn't seem like it. I will ask, but the whole header in the slide show isn't that cool.
But I have to put in the 43photo.smugmug.com gallery the site header, so then on the community page, I can have it in there. Smugmug was kind enough to donate the gallery for the site.

It was a bit of work. Maybe I will try to fix a few of the typos above.

Just a quick observation. With so many images and so few votes to date, maybe the voting process should allow choices 1-3 and then when the votes are done, you score the images based on the number first, second and third votes they got. Kinda like and F1 podium score, 9 for 1st, 7 for 2nd, 5 for third or summat like that...

05-03-2007, 04:23 PM
Very True, but I would really have to write/find a hack to do that.... Give it time.

05-03-2007, 06:08 PM
I voted! There were many nice entries to choose from, so it was tough.

I like the Smugmug gallery, Tony. Having all the images the same size makes them much easier to view, and I also think it's more fair that way. It's nice to be able to look at the entries individually rather than scrolling down. The display size is large enough that you can get a good feeling for the image, but small enough that it doesn't take too long to download. I like that you can click and see the larger versions against a dark background. Great work!

If anybody is feeling overwhelmed by the number of entries (like I was), you can go through the gallery very quickly, so give it a try.

Last month was a very large month for the old system. This month I am trying out a supporters only vote. We will try it in the 2 contests and see how it works. But basically, the supporters can vote for the images they like best. So we will see.

This was the first time I entered, and the first time I -- started to -- vote, but apparently the polls closed before I got around to it. Sorry to all. There were lots of beautiful photographs, and I looked through them all more than once; personally, my own final selections were based not only on photographic merit but on aptness to the theme, which made me reject a couple of photographs that I otherwise loved. I have a couple of suggestions in the interest of a bit more objectivity:

1. For contests only, perhaps it would be best to post the photos anonymously (no names/logos on photos, no idents with the images).

2. I don't care for the way in which vote totals are visible (if this was so during the voting itself; if the totals appeared only after the polls were closed, it's fine).

I thought about these issues only because I want to vote without favoritism based on any personal feelings about one person or another.
Thanks for the efforts, Tony.

I agree with the post above. Personally I didn't vote because I was out of pocket until last night and when I did get on, the 49 entries was a bit overwhelming for my exhausted mind and body. Just an excuse, but it's mine. :smile:

One more suggestion would be that the voter not be allowed to vote for his/her own photo.

deevee and SkyWriter!!

Great shots both of them - well deserved victories!!

Also: Thanks to Tony and other behind-the-scene persons who have been working hard to make this a joyful activity!

Cheers, Jens.

thanks Jebir;
i concur that one should not be allowed to vote for him/herself for the obvious reasons (no competition allows for this )
and that name should not be on the images for nepotism/favoritism reasons
it's only fair
cheers :nerd:

Jens –

Thank you – very much; the same for all the folks who made this competition possible, and needless to say – everyone who voted for a Pair of Wax Wings. I’m humbled that those two birds were rated so highly by so many fellow photographers.

I agree that there ought to be some standard rules, and after viewing the other suggestions recommend the following:

1) Standard photo-file size (such as no larger than 800 x 600 -or- 600 x 800) – or some standard;
2) Anonymous entries;
3) Hidden votes until after the voting ends;
4) Restricted entry time (something like a 24-to-48 hour time period);
5) Restricted voting time (again – something like a 24-to-48 hour time period) - a week or so after the photos have been posted.

I also like the idea of being able to vote for the top three, but I can see where this might create some programming headaches. Clearly, there were quite a few entries in this month’s competition that I believe deserved more recognition than they got; being able to vote for the top three would assure more competitors would get recognized and also reward consistency.

Congrats to you two, well done.............

1. Many congrats to the winners.

2. Skywriter, I'm in agreement with your suggestions for new rules.

Best. Bill
