View Full Version : May 1-15th - committee vote

05-18-2007, 12:47 AM
For this contest I am trying out something new, I have begun forming a committee for votes. The hope is to make voting a little more than a random input to a more constructive excersise. I have taken some volunteers and and ask some specifically to be voters for this excercise. So we will see how this works out.
The pictures are on the home page, as well as in this gallery (http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/2786463).
All of the images will be listed and the votes will be shown below them.
I gave the voters the ability to vote for up to 3 shots - They will be assigned as 1 - for a first pick, .75 for a second pick, and .5 for a 3rd pick.

2 MadMax40
#3: Madmax40 - on screen scene.
It has a nice Hitchcock feel to it. Nice black and white, original
"picture in picture" idea. -Marco
#3 Mad max - Very creative use of taking a picture and looking at the LCD I love this idea. -Tony

4 Mick_finn
#1- #1 Unbearable Lightness.
It takes courage to shoot one's own portrait (not a reflection or shadow) and it takes a lot of courage to put yourself in a vulnerable pose like the photographer of this image did. The feminine (positive meant) pose and treatment make this photo an absolute winner. -Henk
#1 Motivation: A Very grabbing image created by simple means. I didn't like the flat light initially but the lighting puts emphasis on the intensity in mick-finn's eyes. I like this photograph more and more the more I look at it. His pose and expression give me an impression of a serious personality - almost in grief. Technically well executed. -Jens

6 Toplake
#1: Toplake - Framed Ego
Very well executed frame in frame shot. Lovely colors, great scenery.
I like the repetition - the small "portrait". -Marco
#1 -My pick is #6 'Framed Ego.' A lot of thought an careful planning, and he comes across as real.
Most were trite, "shot a reflection of myself". The bits and pieces of slides were interesting but you can't see a person. Your photo (which I happen to like) also fails to show you as a person.
Long ago in the dim dark past of film, when I had three Contax bodies, I set up an outdoor scene with a model in a chair, one camera on a tripod aimed at the model, with me standing off to the side with a 2nd camera around my neck, directing the models pose with one hand as I shot the scene with the third camera mounted on another tripod, which I controlled with my hidden hand. Contest is a good start, - Richard
#2 Framed Ego - Creativity with a smile, excellent executed. -Henk
#1 I liked the picture creativity of this shot. The frame idea was a great way to show a self portrait. -Katie

#2 Very nice concept, nice shadows. I do feel a bit distracted by the
tilted painting, which MUST be a "Bob Ross" - happy little tree -
painting. -Marco

#1 -Luke - I love the "me Too" picture. It is a great double take of yourself. It shows the whole face but creatively good job. -Tony

16 Parallaxkid
#2nd Motivation: This is fairly standard idea but it is the first time I have seen it implemented for a self portrait. It is eye-catching and, in this case, may to some extent reflects a devotion to photography. Trying to grasp parallaxkid's personality: The well executed PS work indicates a technically-minded person but he is shy, diguising his face. -Jens
#2 - This picture was very unique. It took a lot of time to get all of the "slides". It took talent. -Katie

#3 Parallaxkid - Creative use of Photoshop. You really took time to produce a great result. -Tony

#3rd Motivation: Technically flawless and very creative. The "Sense of Mystery" is mainly conveyed by the details.* I'd like to have seen more of a mystic mood as well. Still a nice piece work. -Jens

Great job toplake, as well as to everyone else. I also wanted to say this new voting system seems to be a lot better. Not only do you get a mark, but a comment/critique as well. I like it. And thanks to Jens, Bill, Katie and Tony for your comments.
