View Full Version : Sept 16-30th Black & White

tspore
09-16-2007, 05:08 PM
September 16-30th The theme is "Black and White" This includes more than the photo technique of making a color document Black and white.
All shots must be taken from September 1st-30th.
Also all shots must be from a 4/3 system camera*
Contest will close on September 30th at approx 7 PM PST.

To place photos into this thread for voting -
#1 photos need to have EXIF info - To prove you own the photo, as well as Camera, and date taken. From now on without the EXIF info we cannot accept these we will ask for a version of the photo which will include EXIF, but if we can't get it, then your shot will not be included. *
#2 Attach the photo to this thread.
A. You may upload as an attachement. The photos, will then be added to the gallery, and you can then delete them out of your attachement box if you like.
B. Upload your photo to the smugmug gallery that we have provided you, but if you do you must make sure of 2 things.
a. That in the comments of the photo includes your username
b. Link the photo back from the gallery to this thread, so that we know forsure who it belongs too.
c. If those 2 things are not done with a uploaded photo we will not know for sure who owns the photo.
C. You may link a photo from another account on the web. For example, many people already have smugmug, flickr, and pbase accounts, you can link a photo from there to this thread, we will take it and place it into the contest gallery during the month.
#3 To upload photos to our smugmug gallery -
http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/3483735
User - tony@fourthirdsphoto.com
password - white
Please make sure that you upload photos to the correct gallery.
#4 Only include 1 photo per person. We can change out the photos, but you must only submit 1 entry per contest.
#5 A Title - We really appreciate having titles included with the photo.

Common Questions:
A 4/3 system camera includes: these include Olympus E-1, E-300, E-330, E-400, E-410, E-500, E-510, Also Panasonic DMC-L1 and Leica Digilux 3.
How can I make sure that my photo has exif? IF you use Olympus studio do not export the raw file as a 16Bit tiff, these seems to eat up the exif info. #2 Do not use "Save for web" feature in Photoshop. Just save it as you would any standard jpeg.
Why don't we let you use old photos?
These photo contests are to support creativity, as well as a fair playing field. We want everyone to have a chance to participate. As well, as be actively involved in shooting on a regular basis. That way we make the contest only open for a short period.
What if my Attachement box is full?
2 option either A delete out some attachements by going here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editattachments).
Or B upload to the gallery that we have provided.
Or C upload a shot to another gallery on the web, such as hosted by Smugmug, or flickr, and link that into the thread.
what does the site do with the photos from the contest?
Really we do not allow printing of these photos in the thread, and really they are there to show off how good the users and the system is. We will not use your photos in any manner, unless you are asked for written permission.
How do I win?
1. A photo should fit the theme of this month's contest.
2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot.
3. Emotional appeal, in theory the shot should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.
4. Be creative
5. Have fun.

Hmmm. That's a change from Ann's initial posting of "Monochrome" and here I have sundry "monochrome" (as in 1 colour and various shades) photographs. Oh well, bring forth the "Blacknwhite-o-matic" :)

tspore

Right. What we decided was Black and White this time. And next month, I am going to combine Monochrome and Duotone - For simplicity sake.
Monochrome - many tones of 1 shade (usually black)
Duotone - Sepia - basically 2 colors usually Blue & black, Yellow & Black, but other colors can be used to.
Anyhow, I wanted to get all three in, but the year is drawing to a close to quick.

Alright, well I'm new to 43photo, so I'll give it a shot, here. My photo should be titled "Splash," and it is a picture of a fountain. I guess a question I had quickly was, what exactly do you mean by "Black and white?" I noticed that you didn't want just a color image desaturated, so I did a lot of work to make the fountain look as much like Tri-x as possible... is that still considered a "monotone" image? Anyway, there's my photo entry, I hope everyone likes it.

Heh, I almost forgot to link my photo!

Hi Ann
Sorry to be a pain but I am new to this! My pic for the comp B/W is No 10 in the gallery and has the title "Weather Drizzle" . In my post I put the title as "My Other World".
I see now where I went wrong and will know for the next comp but if you could to change the title to "My Other World" I really would appreciate it
Many thanks for this and all your hard work. I run a Forum for free IT and computing help in a small rural area here in the SW of the UK so i know how much time and effort goes in

Well, here's my entry. I call it "Still a Classic". It's from last night at a small car show. It's a 1962 Corvette that was just plain beautiful. I used my E-1/Shld-2 with the Sigma 24mm f1.8 at f5.0 with a shutter speed of 1/50th of a second and ISO 200. A FL-40 was used for the flash. There was some minor processing done in the new Corel X2 with channel mixer for the BW conversion. Thanks!

There are some really, really good photos in this thread.

Here's my modest contribution. I'm calling it exactly what it is: "The Loneliest Road, Highway 50, Nevada".

This is a slightly lower resolution version of what I added to the contest gallery:
