View Full Version : October 1-15th Monochrome / Duotone

10-01-2007, 01:24 PM
October 1-15th The theme is "Monochrome / Duotone" Basically not full color documents. Mono - 1 color, Duo - 2 color, this includes photo techniques such as Sepia, Split toning, etc.
All shots must be taken from September 15th and October 15th.
Also all shots must be from a 4/3 system camera*
Contest will close on October 15th at approx 7 PM PST.

To place photos into this thread for voting -
#1 photos need to have EXIF info - To prove you own the photo, as well as Camera, and date taken. From now on without the EXIF info we cannot accept these we will ask for a version of the photo which will include EXIF, but if we can't get it, then your shot will not be included. *
#2 Attach the photo to this thread.
A. You may upload as an attachement. The photos, will then be added to the gallery, and you can then delete them out of your attachement box if you like.
B. Upload your photo to the smugmug gallery that we have provided you, but if you do you must make sure of 2 things.
a. That in the comments of the photo includes your username
b. Link the photo back from the gallery to this thread, so that we know forsure who it belongs too.
c. If those 2 things are not done with a uploaded photo we will not know for sure who owns the photo.
C. You may link a photo from another account on the web. For example, many people already have smugmug, flickr, and pbase accounts, you can link a photo from there to this thread, we will take it and place it into the contest gallery during the month.
#3 To upload photos to our smugmug gallery -
User - tony@fourthirdsphoto.com
password - monochrome
Please make sure that you upload photos to the correct gallery.
#4 Only include 1 photo per person. We can change out the photos, but you must only submit 1 entry per contest.
#5 A Title - We really appreciate having titles included with the photo.

Common Questions:
A 4/3 system camera includes: these include Olympus E-1, E-300, E-330, E-400, E-410, E-500, E-510, Also Panasonic DMC-L1 and Leica Digilux 3.
How can I make sure that my photo has exif? IF you use Olympus studio do not export the raw file as a 16Bit tiff, these seems to eat up the exif info. #2 Do not use "Save for web" feature in Photoshop. Just save it as you would any standard jpeg.
Why don't we let you use old photos?
These photo contests are to support creativity, as well as a fair playing field. We want everyone to have a chance to participate. As well, as be actively involved in shooting on a regular basis. That way we make the contest only open for a short period.
What if my Attachement box is full?
2 option either A delete out some attachements by going here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editattachments).
Or B upload to the gallery that we have provided.
Or C upload a shot to another gallery on the web, such as hosted by Smugmug, or flickr, and link that into the thread.
what does the site do with the photos from the contest?
Really we do not allow printing of these photos in the thread, and really they are there to show off how good the users and the system is. We will not use your photos in any manner, unless you are asked for written permission.
How do I win?
1. A photo should fit the theme of this month's contest.
2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot.
3. Emotional appeal, in theory the shot should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.
4. Be creative
5. Have fun.

A look a head - October 16-30 -Seasonal - Shows off the season in your part of the world. Shots for this must be taken between October 1-30th.

For those who aren't completely sure, here are some detailed explanations of monochrome & duotone, as well as some tips on creating your own monochrome/duotone images.

What is monochrome? Detailed answer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome).

More info:

painting done in a range of tones of a single color

Title: The Tool Shed
In the gallery w/EXIF

This tool shed is on the grounds of an old sugar plantation buiilt circa 1796. The builder of the house served in the War of 1812 in the Louisiana Militia. He and his wife are buried in the back yard beneath a massive Live Oak tree. The house itself is the original with a few additions by an owner in the mid 19th century, but the out buildings were burned in 1864 and rebuilt at various times after the Civil War. This tool shed is part of a dogtrot style barn. The tools are mallets typical of those used on a working sugar plantation. By the way, this plantation has a working sugar cane cooker that gets demonstrated at various times throughout the year, typically at sugar cane harvest time.
