This 2nd half of October's contest is "Seasonal". Shows off the season in your part of the world.
The contest will close at the end of the day on the last day of the month.

You can upload your entry to this gallery: http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/3661224 (http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/3661224)
Username: tony@fourthirdsphoto.com (tony@fourthirdsphoto.com)
Password: e3insanity
Please link them back here, and make sure that you include your username so we know who it belongs to. OR you can place the photos in this thread (either by attachment or from your own online album) and they will be posted in the gallery.
Here are some tips on uploading an attachment:
http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/faq.p...q_new_faq_item (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/faq.php?faq=common#faq_new_faq_item)
To upload a thumbnail with a link to the larger version, HERE (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=117384#post117384) is a link from page 2 of this thread.

If you don't know how to embed the exif in your photo, here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=114679#post114679) are some instructions I posted in the "keepers" forum that might help.

In order to qualify, please follow these site rules:
1 - Shot must be taken with a 4/3 system camera.
2 - Only 1 entry per person (but you can replace it with a new one).
3 - Photo entry must be dated (photo taken) and posted between October 1st & 31st. and EXIF info embedded so the date and camera used are visible.
4 - Optional; A title is nice to include with your photo.

Here are a few guidelines to follow:
1. The photo should fit the theme of this month's contest.
2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot.
3. The photo should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.
---------------
This event is sponsered by media chance and the winner will get first pick from one of the following prizes:

</td></tr></tbody></table>
The top 4 contributers will be entered into the 4/3photo photographer of the year contest.
----------------
Common Questions:
What is a 4/3 system camera? These include Olympus E-1, E-300, E-330, E-400, E-410, E-500, E-510, Also Panasonic DMC-L1 and Leica Digilux 3.
How can I make sure that my photo has exif? #1 - IF you use Olympus studio do not export the raw file as a 16Bit tiff, these seem to eat up the exif info. #2 - Do not use "Save for web" feature in Photoshop. Just save it as you would any standard jpeg.
Why don't you let us use old photos? These photo contests are to support creativity, as well as a fair playing field. We want everyone to have a chance to participate, as well as be actively involved in shooting on a regular basis. That way we make the contest only open for a short period.
What if my Attachment box is full? 2 options; A - delete out some attachements by going here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editattachments). B - upload to the gallery that we have provided. C - upload a shot to another gallery on the web, such as hosted by Smugmug, or flickr, and link that into the thread.
What does the site do with the photos from the contest? We do not allow printing of these photos in the thread, and they are there to show off how good the users and the systems are. We will not use your photos in any manner, unless you are asked for written permission.
How do I win? 1. A photo should fit the theme of this month's contest. 2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot. 3. The shot should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.

There isn't much change around here in Melbourne, everything is still lush and green... from my backyard the only way to tell that winter is coming around is the busy squirrel gathering all the acorns off the oak tree and burying them in my lawn! The dogs love it - they played hide and seek with 'Mr. Squirrel' all day yesterday.

Title: One Man's Heaven...another Man's Hell

http://43photo.smugmug.com/photos/211683803-S.jpg

San Diego, California saw huge wildfires start yesterday (Sunday10/22) fueled by ferocious Santa Ana winds. The Santa Ana winds blow from the inland desert area out to sea. They produce extremely dry conditions which are ideal for wildfires. The fires started around 9 am and this photo was taken at about 2:45pm (check exif). The smoke was so thick that it was difficult to see the waves from the beach and the sunlight was nauturally diffused also resulting in an artificial sunset at 3pm. The upside is that the Santa Ana winds blew at a time when we had head high surf in and around San Diego. Heaven for some.

I thought I had. Is the image not in my post? What I would like to do is just put a thumnail up on the post and have that link to a full size image but I am unfamiliar with vBulletin!

AnnF

Yes, apparently you had. When I looked back on the email there was a link for a photo, but it's not showing up in here. I didn't check to see why because I thought maybe you had deleted it.

I'll PM you with instructions and photos if you like.

As a matter of fact, yes. It's in this link. I'll include it in my first post above as well.

Thanks for the Upload Pics link. Had been using that but what i would prefer to do is just show a thumnail on the post! Thought i wold save bothering you and emailed vBulletin direct for a Users guide. Here's the reply:
Hello John,

We don't have such a guide. Contact that sites staff for help with front-end features.

To upload a thumbnail, go to where your photo is stored and right-click (left-click if you're a lefty like me) on the thumbnail and choose "Properties" at the bottom of the list.

A box will pop up with the location of that photo. Where it says "Location:" highlight the entire url, starting with the "http://..." and moving your mouse all the way to the end of the address (because it usually disappears into the right side of the box).

Right-click (or left-click for lefties), then choose "Copy". You can X out of that box now. In here, just click on the little yellow "Insert Image" box with the mountain in it and then paste your copied url into the space provided. Be sure to delete the highlighted "http://" that's in the space first. Click "OK". Your thumbnail should appear.

Locate where the large version of the photo is and do the same (as above) in choosing the url location. Copy that url.

Click on the thumbnail that you pasted into your message so it's somewhat highlighted, then click on the little blue globe (above the message box) to insert the larger version's url (the same way you did for the thumbnail). Click "OK". That should do it.

I'm out of town at the moment, visiting with my girls and grandkids. Will be at a hot air balloon festival this afternoon in Statesville, NC. That should make for cool pics!
I'll get these all updated after I get back home tomorrow evening.

The exif data seems to be gone after I corrected the horizon - should I post the original as well?

I entered an earlier version of this same photo, but after looking at it and talking about it with a friend, I edited it a little more. All I did was crop a little, and clone out an annoying shadow. I already deleted my earlier message, and will try to delete my earlier entry off Smugmug. Hope I don't rock the boat:D.

"Fungal Fireworks"

http://43photo.smugmug.com/photos/215161521-O.jpg

Living in an area carpeted by conifers, trees not given to the autumnal splendour often associated with the northern hemisphere, I had to more literally search the earth for an evocative seasonal image. As I see others have discovered, fiery fungi are well suited. This little clutch in amid the wood waste of a log salvage yard were lent to diagonal framing, where the nap of the earth allowed the plane of focus to follow them, while leaving the opposite corners of the image gently blended away.

Incidentally, I collected a sample for submission to the Vancouver Mycological Society's annual Mushroom Fair, where various experts gave them a looking over. I have concluded that mycology is hard. Identification ranged from Pholiota astragalina to Cortinarius sp. to Gymnopilus sp. I'd very much like to believe they are astragalina, as the smiles and nods when this identification was suggested were priceless, but that species is documented to have a strongly bitter taste, while these have none to speak of. No, I am not currently attempting to determine their psychotropic properties.
