View Full Version : November Contest, 1st half - STREETS

AnnF
11-01-2007, 01:07 AM
This 1st half of November's contest is "Streets".
Open to interpretation (Anything that has to do with streets; be it street performers, kids playing, a turtle crossing the road, sunset on a windy road into the horizon, etc.).
There are lots of opportunities to get creative, so let's see what you can do!

The contest will run from the 1st through the 15th and the thread will close on the 16th for last minute submissions taken on the 15th.

You can upload your entry to this gallery: http://43photo.smugmug.com/gallery/3752042
Username: tony@fourthirdsphoto.com (tony@fourthirdsphoto.com)
Password: road

Please link them back here, and make sure that you include your username so we know who it belongs to. OR you can place the photos in this thread (either by attachment or from your own online album) and they will be posted in the gallery.
Here are some tips on uploading an attachment:
http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/faq.p...q_new_faq_item (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/faq.php?faq=common#faq_new_faq_item)
To upload a thumbnail with a link to the larger version, HERE (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=117384#post117384) is a link from page 2 of October's thread.

If you don't know how to embed the exif in your photo, here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=114679#post114679) are some instructions I posted in the "keepers" forum that might help. If that doesn't help and your program doesn't do the job, send me a PM and you can email me the photo along with the original and I will do it for you.

In order to qualify, please follow these site rules:
1 - Shot must be taken with a 4/3 system camera.
2 - Only 1 entry per person (but you can replace it with a new one).
3 - Photo entry must be dated (photo taken) between November 1st & 15th and EXIF info embedded so the date and camera used are visible.
4 - Optional; A title is nice to include with your photo. Otherwise, it will be given one.

Here are a few guidelines to follow:
1. The photo should fit the theme of this month's contest.
2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot.
3. The photo should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.
---------------
This event is sponsered by media chance and the 1st prize winner will get first pick from one of the following prizes (below). Should that prize winner choose the smugmug account, the 2nd prize winner can choose any one software package offered:
<table><tbody><tr><td width="50%">
http://www.mediachance.com/nimages/mediachance.gif (http://www.mediachance.com/)

Choose one of these programs:
PhotoBrush (http://mediachance.com/pbrush/index.html)| Dynamic Photo HDR (http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html)
DCE AutoEnhance (http://mediachance.com/dce/index.html) | PureImage

(Click the titles to read about each program)

</td><td width="35%">
http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/geek/gab/images/0/smugmug.gif (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/gab_redirect.php?id=5&script=editpost&forumid=26)

Or choose:
A free year (pro) at smugmug

(A $150 dollar value)

</td></tr></tbody></table>
The top 4 contributers will be entered into the 4/3photo photographer of the year contest.
----------------
Common Questions:
What is a 4/3 system camera? These include Olympus E-1, E-300, E-330, E-400, E-410, E-500, E-510, Also Panasonic DMC-L1 and Leica Digilux 3.
How can I make sure that my photo has exif? #1 - IF you use Olympus studio do not export the raw file as a 16Bit tiff, these seem to eat up the exif info. #2 - Do not use "Save for web" feature in Photoshop. Just save it as you would any standard jpeg.
Why don't you let us use old photos? These photo contests are to support creativity, as well as a fair playing field. We want everyone to have a chance to participate, as well as be actively involved in shooting on a regular basis. That way we make the contest only open for a short period.
What if my Attachment box is full? 2 options; A - delete out some attachements by going here (http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editattachments). B - upload to the gallery that we have provided. C - upload a shot to another gallery on the web, such as hosted by Smugmug, or flickr, and link that into the thread.
What does the site do with the photos from the contest? We do not allow printing of these photos in the thread, and they are there to show off how good the users and the systems are. We will not use your photos in any manner, unless you are asked for written permission.
How do I win? 1. A photo should fit the theme of this month's contest. 2. The photo should be technically unique. It shows creativity in the shot, and wasn't just another snap shot. 3. The shot should have some sort of emotional appeal to the viewer.Have fun!

Oops, sorry. I'll fix that in a minute. I copied and pasted some of that info and changed it for the following month and forgot to change that part.

Thanks,

So I'm guessing this is sort of open to interpretation? Just trying to make sure. The weather here has been just awful for photography. It's been dang cold.

Ann: I just went through your 21 step tutorial on embedding the exif data in photos to be submitted. Since I don't have Photoshop, I was hoping I could approximate the technique in Elements, but, well, to quote Forrest Gump "I'm not a smart man." Looking through my posts on Smugmug, they almost all have most of the pertinent data, like ISO, F-stop, and shutter speed available in the information tabs. I'm wondering if that is enough, because I'm currently working night shift now, so I can't enroll in any PS night classes. Finally, I just went through the gallery for last month's second half competition and wow! I can't remember ever being so favorably impressed with the competition series. Thanks for your time and effort, I'll go back to looking for my eyecup.

Rocky: We basically need to see the date the photo was taken and the camera used in the exif. I don't know about other programs, but I can do the same thing in PhotoImpact. But as I mentioned, if someone has a problem they can just send me the original along with the entry photo and I will do it for them.

Lara: Yes. Anything that has to do with streets; be it street performers, kids playing, a turtle crossing the road. I'll post this in the original message as well.

Hi Oly
I'm in the UK so don't know this location but where on earth (or above it) were you when you took this shot?

Thanks ACME, I wasn't sure of SmgMg's conventions. I guess the -O signifies original image (I knew about adding the .jpg)?

The shot was taken NW of Chicago East bound. I added a comment to that affect at the web page but I don't know if it shows up with the photo.

Best,
Oly

Hi,

Well here's my entry - I'm only a newbie who's just joined - I hope that's cool for me to enter here anyway. I hope I just scraped in on time too - I just saw this thread and realized this is closing today, so it inspired me to grab a quick few shots when I got home and throw one in here just for fun.

"Streetlighting - Artificial vs Natural" - was just a nice time of evening and I thought that angle of the streetlight was cool with the moon in the shot shining down above the artificial light.

Taken with E-510 with standard 14-42mm lens.
