There was once a post here linking to a freeware plugin for Windows XP which would make the ORF-files visible in windows explorer as thumbnails.

I have forgotten the name of the plugin and I can't relocate the post.

Anyone here with a good memory?

Cheers, Jens.

OK, I found the previous post, it was the program dpMagic ( http://www.dpmagic.com/products.html ) but they seems to have dropped support for the Olympus cameras after they began compressing the RAW files...

So, the problem persists.

Jens,
I suggest you try ORFshell.exe. You can find the download at this URL:-
http://olypedia.de/Olympus_RAW_Vorschau_im_Windows-Explorer

It works with E3 ORfs.

Jens, I think you mean Arcsoft Raw Viewer (http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/), since that was mentioned here before. It's free, but doesn't work for me on E-3 files.

Thanks Gwyver,

I installed the ORFshell but it won't show my E-3 files (E-510 and previous cameras works fine though). Did you get it to work woth E-3 ORFs? (I know, it says it should...)

Cheers, Jens

Thanks Marlof,

I installed ArcSoft but as for you, it won't show E-3 ORFs.

I guess I'll have to browse from within some software:dontknow:

Jens,
Yes it works with my E3 ORFs. Also it has enabled the ORF thumbnails to be displayed in ExifToolGUI which I use to examine the EXIF data.

It's a couple of months since I installed ORFshell - so my memory is a bit rusty - but as I recall the thumbnail display didn't work immediately after installation, though everything appeared as expected following a reboot of my PC. I think this occurs because the program is a shell extension to explorer etc, and so the changes won't be recognised until the PC is restarted.

Is there a link to the referred page in English so I can figure out what to down load for XP Pro?

Thanks

John,

The second section of the original URL is entitled "ORFshell" and contains a link labelled (in English) as 'Download ORFshell v0.99 beta8' which is what you need.
For simplicity here is the actual URL to the download:-

http://dumpexif.oly-e.de/download/orfshell.zip

Thanks Chris.
These Oly RAW files are really confusing for me to figure out how to handle.

Shout at me if I have the wrong idea here but to easily and quickly view ORF files I use Irfanview. It's free and here:
http://www.irfanview.net/
The thumbnail viewer I find very good and works well with the main viewer. Loads of useful features too. Incidently I have to resize large numbers of images to a specific size from time to time and the batch processing feature on Irfanview is, IMHO, much better that PS.

I just don't want to start any application only to see the thumbnails. I'm sure Irfanview is very nice.

I was curious about this tool too, installed it on WinXP-SP2, but to no avail.

I've heard about a OLYMPUS RAW codec for MS Vista (http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/software/codec/index.cfm), but haven't tried, since I dont use that O.S.
