View Full Version : Assignment #8: Birds

Maybe we're all getting a little carried away with this. Admittedly a few birds did act strange, but that's no reason to...
- Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds

In the wild or in the city, birds are plentiful and provide a popular subject for photographers. Presenting plenty of colour and variety, spotting and identifying them is a hobby in itself. For this assignment, let's look at the challenges involved in photographing these flighty creatures.

Ok here is my contribution to the Bird Assignment...
I was at a Bird Aviary yesterday and had so much fun takeing pics of the awesome looking birds they had in there encloseures .. they had some beautifull birds there ...
the only bad thing was i had to shoot through the small chain link fencing they had all around the enclosure .. so I had to try hard to focus through the fencing .. some of the shots look soft due to the fencing..
all shot with the E-1 in Raw ..

I was out a couple of weeks ago when the weather was nice, giving my 50-200 its first real work doing what I bought it for: shooting nature. Here are a couple good shots of birds that I turned up. They're significantly cropped, but I think they're reasonably good, sharp shots. I'm improving, anyway :)

#1: A robin, found outside my apartment before I even made it to the forest.

#2: A woodpecker. Cute, if you ask me.

I love the way people photograph birds, and all of the colours and variety that exists in the world. It's a hard subject to have a unique view on, but it's great to see when it happens.

I live and work downtown, so the birds I see look like this:

Well I love birds, and there's some real beauties here! Some great out-of-the-ordinary takes too, like Old Jim's Golden Eagle's talons.

Here's one of my favorites, two Mourning Doves sitting on the fence during a snowstorm, taken through the kitchen window.

http://www.pbase.com/ravenwing/image/91036403.jpg

For something a little different, here's a couple of the parrots who let me share the house. The first is Tausi, an African Red Bellied Parrot. He's a real character, and sweet as all get out.

I'll add a few. E-3 and 50-200 with TC1.4.

Flying birds are very difficult for the 50-200 to handle unless IMO you get a good head start in tracking them. One the lens misses your done.

A few Red Kite photos taken in Mid-Wales at the weekend. These are all wild birds which are attracted to a particular farm where the farmer has been putting out meat for them for many years. In the winter there can be as many as 400 Kites but this time of year it's just those who are breeding locally plus probably a few non-breeders, about 20 birds. All with the E-510, 50-200 and EC-14, C-AF, IS off.

I see eagles almost everyday on my drive to the farm. One day this one was "right there", and I had to take his picture. He's looking for dinner for his mate who's on the nest right now.

The Mourning Dove just happened to be right outside my back door one afternoon, and I managed to get one shot before it left.

The last one was a real treat - dozens of American White Pelicans gathered in a little pond by the road. I cropped out houses in the background and some water in the foreground to focus more on the birds, and to give it an "in the middle of the wetlands" look.

Actually, a birding friend and brother priest told me it was an immature Western Meadowlark. He said the Eastern and Western are hard to distinguish, but being it was western South Dakota it was very likely Western. I thought was a cute bird. Hope to find more this fall during migration. Now if we could just skip past winter...

Good call. Could very well be just that. Here's an Eastern Meadowlark (one of which is mine). We had a lot of them flocking to our backyard in TN.
