Assignment #10: Wide

Wide angle lenses give us a new way of seeing, but are also the most challenging lenses to use. They demand thoughtful composition and special technique, and occasionally needs the photographer to b a contortionist as well. But if their characteristics can be mastered, they are very rewarding.

For this assignment, let's look at lenses wider than 15mm. New photos are always encouraged, but past favourites are also welcomed. We have some great ultra-wide lenses, so let's give them some exercise.

This was the wierd, wet summer of 2007 on Vancouver Island. This is off Point Holmes, looking southish to Denman Island. For some daft reason, the Air Cadets were practicing in gliders. Guess it was good for handling a nasty 30kt cross wind as they joined the circuit at YQQ.

This one is from this winter, again at Comox. The most wonderful 12-60 at 12mm.

This is standing on the banks of the Courtenay River just where it enters Comox Harbour looking towards Royston. It was a day where it couldn't decide what it wanted to do. 20 minutes before this picture I had bright sun and 20 minutes after, a raging snow storm.

I took these three at the "Soul Tower" of the Ming Tombs outside Beijing in March. Built in 1587, the tower is considered the overall symbol of the thirteen Ming tombs, and it presents a challenge to photograph.

First, from the main approach, looking up at the huge wall surrounding the tower; the tower's roof can be seen at the top of the frame:

Taken in Winchester Cathedral last week, a great place to go on a rainy day! Taken with the 7-14 @ 7mm.

This is the north wing, its pretty much the original Norman architecture.
