View Full Version : Assignment #22: Colour

In my photography, color and composition are inseparable. I see in color.
- William Albert Allard

Colour caused a lot of controversy when it emerged as a new technology, and perhaps there are some parallels with the latest revolution that we're now part of. Indeed there are some hazards with colour, because it can be seductive, tempting us to take photos as "eye candy" without regard to composition or light. But rather than being the poor cousin to black and white, colour photography requires a set of skills that black and white doesn't even touch on. It adds another compositional element, and can be a challenge in a scene that would otherwise be straightforward. Capturing colour digitally introduces new challenges in its authentic reproduction.

For the next few weeks, let's look for images that show off the best of colour in our photography. Strong colour, subtle colour, vibrant or pastel, it offers a world of artistic options. While new photographs are always encouraged, for this assignment let's also see the best examples of our past work as well.

For me, this one seems to work better in color. I converted it to black & white, but it lost some of it's pop.

Had a quick look for something with bold colours, found this from a day out at Warwick Castle this summer. The Black knight lost of course!

Those are some really nice shots everyone! Wow, Jim. Those are eye-popping!

Here's mine for just a few days ago. In just a few short days, all the leaves are now gone on that tree!

Hey - my first photos to 4/3.com and am I excited!:D

First one is with a 50-200.
B&W for flowers is rarely a good thing, but how about the bold lines of an orchid?
The third used the Oly macro 50mm 2.0 lens all on a 510.

How does one upload larger images than these?

Yeah I see that now:doh:. I was wondering how much the resizing would affect them. Thanks

Thanks Colin, glad you like it. It was just before the sun broke the horizon. Very serene and almost a mystic place to me.

I took the fishing picture a year or so ago and just love it still for the color. The Flower is just a rainbow of color and I feel that it is far from good color. And the bridge was just amazing with the dark colors, rare to get for me. Let me know what you think as I am New to photography.

Just started with my new E-510 and a 300mm ed

This photo was taken on the island of Saint Paul Alaska, Nov '07. Mostly everything on the island was "natural" (rust, unpainted or the color the material was delivered). Walking around town I came upon these houses. At the time of the picture there were snowstorms passing through which had left a fresh layer of snow on the roofs. Even though they are not bold colors I liked the way they stood out against the white and grey background.

I have no idea what these are called, but I love the sparkle effect they have. No post processing has been done other than to change the size.

My first attempt here. I think the blue looks nicer in the full resolution version.

Yesterday's walk around the block came up with this. I was struck by the yellow against a weathered unpainted wooden plank background. Taken with the 12-60 lens, which seems to produce a rather nice bokeh. Sorry about the rather ratty leaves, but it's not my plant to pull leaves off! :)

Hey everyone, this is my very first post ever on this forum :o It has been soo hot that everything around here is brown, lol, but I still managed to find a little bit of color here and there. Hope everyone enjoys the pics.

One is a close crop of sumac fruit (there is a lot of these in SwampEast Mo). The other pic is a couple of Magic Day-Lilies. Both photos were take with E510 w/ kit 40-150mm.
Thanks, Clint

I like the texture of the petals on this thing. Getting ready to bloom. Shot with a E620 / 70-300. That lens is long gone and replaced it with a 50-200 SWD.
