View Full Version : Assignment #28: Decay

Most subjects photographed are, just by virtue of being photographed, touched with pathos.
- Susan Sontag
Things that show the effects of age and abandonment are often fertile sources of inspiration for photographers. For this assignment there's no single subject or technique, but instead let's look at the overall theme of 'decay'.
Sometimes it's difficult to create new images to match a particular theme, so please share your favourite images. Naturally, new photos are always encouraged.

Well, being as how decaying buildings are near and dear to my heart, here's two from the last couple of weeks. Both with the E-520 and 50-200, click 'em for larger versions and the exif info. Comments and criticism always appreciated.

A gate I spent many childhood years going through, over, and around; apparently there's no longer a need.

Nothing special here, but I think it fits the theme well. One of my first shots with the 35mm macro on the E-410 a while back:

This is a crossmember on a mill once used to crush talc ore in Warm Spring Canyon, which opens into southern Death Valley. Taken about 2 weeks ago.

I have a lot of photos of 'decay' from that trip, but I'll show just one more, from the same abandoned mill:

It seems like we all like to take shots of decaying items... I just hope no dentists get into this thread
Here is a shot from my trip to Corsica, this is a door to the citadel in Ajaccio. They are still using it as a military base. Taken with the Kit 14-42.

This one almost got ME in the process. I had just got done taking a picture, took one step back, then saw this land literally inches in front of me where I was just standing!! Close call to say the least.

i must say that i have been enjoying this assignment -- there is a lot of decay in this region of poland and so i was feeling like everything was the perfect subject. too much to show really.
i snapped this one today while i was walking home for lunch. in terms of equipment, i had my e-520 and only the 35mm macro with me. i wasn't quite sure how i wanted to compose this shot so i took a few stabs at it. i knew that i wanted the peeling paint, the door handle and the building marker plate. anyway, comments/critiques are always welcomed and appreciated.
cheers.

will --
i love the old gas-pump :). my great uncle used to have one of those in front of his old a-frame house in geary, ok. i remember his always being brightly painted -- thanks for the walk down memory lane.
jim --
what a gruesome scene. certainly no comments on death here, but at least there is some legacy for the poor thing -- even if it is on an online photography forum.
cheers.

Time takes it's toll... if you can zoom in, there's lots of growth on the glider.
The bird shot was taken with my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV380 video camera, which only shoots 640x480... does it count? Sometimes, you can only take the shot with what ya got. :D

Here's one from an abandoned farmhouse the other day. Although my fellow photog and I were inside most of the time, it was damn cold in there (-10 to -20*C). Some of these photos need to be viewed at a larger size to really appreciate them. I've included a link after the photos for any of those who are interested. Hope you all enjoy them. :)
