Assignment #29: Silhouette

Photographs taken against the light can create powerful and simple forms, or they can be playful and whimsical. Like everything else in photography, the only limit is your own imagination and creativity. For this assignment, please try something new and see what you can create.

View from Stuart Mountain late afternoon. The "spear heads" are tropical "black boys" Xanthorrhoea johnsonii. The trees are eucalyptus species.
E3, 14-35mm @ 14mm, 1/100 sec, F10.
The end of a day exploring the smaller F stops (I went to F13). I found that the image degradation compared to the sweet spot of the lens is really quite subtle. F13 on the 14-35 is as sharp, or sharper than F5.6 on the 12-60mm, for example.

Was out walking in the area taking pictures of a Waterfall. Saw how the sun beat on part of the Niagara Escarpment and snapped away.

Don't know if this can be called creative, because it was an accident. Bright day, shot against the light and vastly underexposed. Came out looking like it was taken in the moonlight! E-3 and 50-200 @ 200mm.

When at the Sun 'N Fun Fly-In air show today I was standing under several palm trees. At one point, I looked up and this is what I saw. Thinking about this new assignment, I took a shot of it. I really like the way it came out since you can still see the green of the leaves and the blue in the sky.

Of course, Oly works its magic with these colors! No PP of any kind.

This pic was taken in Brazil with my e1 which was my 1st dslr. When I bought it I had a choice between the canon rebel and the e1 and at the time I knew nothing about cameras and photography. A coin flip determined the e1. Upon seeing this pic I felt a surge of pride and this spurred me on to delve into photography on a deeper level. And now I'm on the comeback trail after 2 years of neck hernia. Oh happy days.

Taken at the Connecticut Fire Academy. Recruit fire fighters attacking a liquid propane fire. When I took this picture, I was practicing with the FL-36 flash and decided to try a few pictures without flash.

I took this shot while shooting for my friend's band. This was also his last night with the band as he is going to be doing studio work, and I thought this shot was appropriate to signify his last night playing with his band.

One from this afternoon, I went around to shoot into the sun specifically for this assignment.

We had a massive storm about a week ago and the Jetty was smashed to bits by the waves. The distance to the water here is about 16 feet - so you can just imagine how big the waves were to actually take out part of the Jetty!

This one really was a fluke...
I often take photos of this large church where I live to test cameras or lenses. This time I pulled the camera out and started snapping without really paying attention to what my settings were. The first couple came out severely underexposed...but, in the end, they probably looked the best of the bunch.

I took this Wed night. The sky was beautful and its hard to catch sunsets in NC (trees are too tall and EVERYWHERE), without being in a tall building. This was the only thing available at the time to silouhette...I did find a statue, but couldnt do it without a building in the background.
