Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for FT review

Admittedly after a very long delay, my review of the Sigma 105 Macro is now published (went up earlier today - ignore the date if it still says July). Sorry to all who visited the review page several...

    Re: Firmware upgrade, E-410, E-510

I upgraded my E-510 using a Vista laptop and Olympus Master - no problems at all.

  3. Re: High Speed CF media test pre and post firmware upgrade on E-510

Good point regarding buffer-clearing; I will add that to the article later.

I have the entire range of E-System cameras here, bar the E-300, so it's my intention to over time to add test data...
  4. High Speed CF media test pre and post firmware upgrade on E-510

I have just posted the results of some testing of high speed CF media using an E-510 both pre- and post- v1.1 firmware upgrade.

A brief comparison with the E-400 is also included. The E-510...

Good work, Tony - I've linked from the FTU forum to your blog :D

  6. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

Pentax, I believe, enables the user to enter a focal length for non-CPU lenses.

You raise an interesting point - one can only ask.

  7. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

IS on, using a good tripod (Manfrotto 058 with 229 head), proved non-problematic with the kit lenses. Longer telephotos could tell a different story.

  8. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

The DXO Analyzer test target I use is four feet wide and needs to be illuminated by 2KW floods. Until recently our test lab was limited to 18 feet distance between camera and target. At that distance...
  9. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

All the tests were done at 42mm (84mm in old currency) - the longest length at of the new 14-42 kit lens, including the 14-50 Leica (for ease of comparison).

My interpretation is that with the...
  10. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

Yes, I fully take on what you say about the charts. But I did consider things carefully. It's difficult to overlay closely matched data with histograms and would have meant more charts, more...
  11. Re: E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

Oh dear  - I'm genuinely shocked; sorry guys. I've fixed it now. I was working late... even the image files were named 501 :dontknow:

Anyway - nobody seems to have commented on the...
  12. E-510 image stabilisation - technically evaluated

And the verdict is positive, see the full article at Four Thirds User if you're interested. There is also a section comparing the in-camera IS with Mega OIS via a Leica 14-50 lens from a Lumix DMC-L1...

Re: ISO Examples from the E-410

Well, you did load the files into Photoshop according to the exif data. Saving from Photoshop means some processing was done by Photoshop.

Why didn't you just export as JPEG from Studio?

Re: ISO Examples from the E-410

Noise reduction and Noise Filter are different. You can't switch the latter off (at least not in the camera). It's either high, standard or low.

It determines how much noise-busting is applied to...

    Re: E-410 review at DPNow

Big difference - there is much more stress on the lens mount (both on the lens side and the body) if you hold the camera up without supporting the lens if that lens is heavy, like a 50-200 or 7-14. ...

Re: ISO Examples from the E-410

Which Noise Filter setting are you using? Of course this may not have anything to do with RAW files, but the JPEGs are sharper with the low setting.

What about the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG - or is that what you were referring to?

Re: hey--the (old) 40-150 is a nice lens!

Yes, although on the whole Sigma make great lenses, the cheap 55-200 I tried was quite disappointing, especially compared to the Olympus 45-150.

Re: ISO Examples from the E-410

My pre-production E-410 came with a copy of Olympus Master, but it could only produce thumbnails from the RAW files, RAW mode crashed the software when faced with E-410 ORFs.

    I checked yesterday...

    Re: raw files, shutter lag

In live view, manual focus mode and manual exposure mode, this is what I deduce happens:

    1. Mirror is up, the shutter is open and lens iris is fully open.

    2. After pressing the shutter...

This is briefly addressed in the review - the only function available from the four way nav pad (left/west button) is user-programmed functions. We'll have more on this in later parts of the review....
