Business Topics Re: A Net Exodus?

Interesting thread. I just sent in all of my Olympus gear today, anticipating a trade-in for Canon gear and a couple of years of paying off said gear taking advantage of 0% interest and no wife or...

Thanks - I'm familiar with those crucifix sets as well with the candles inside, my grandmother and mom and dad both have one too. Again thanks for sharing the info and the pics - love the magpie!
  3. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

Hey, nice picture. Two questions: work at a Catholic institution as that's a crucifix on the wall, and what's in the photographer's hand? Looks like a lovely micro brew
  4. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

Yes, those are good points. I know sometimes I get obsessed with reach and length, but I'm going for the 800 mainly because of the value I can get. I found a used one that is at a great price that is...

Lovely, Don - what camera did you shoot this with? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    All the best,
    Paul
  6. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

Good question. Nikon is great too, but it came down to value of the system and pricing as I can get some gear used at a good price.
  7. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

I'm seriously looking at that...just kind of a gut feeling. What I have is fine, but I'm concerned about where the future will take what I have, and as, sad as it may sound, going out to chase birds...
  8. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

Yes, I've looked on forums at the 500, 600 and 800, and every owner likes the merits of each lens. I was looking at the 800 just for the value and reach, but I'm sure each one has its pros and cons....
  9. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

Yes, I've also considered that. I can get a new one on Amazon that I presume they have had for a while for $7,995; though were I to do that I'd likely sell the Big Tuna for it. But I wasn't too happy...
  10. Camera Topics Re: For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

I do appreciate the feedback. I must say it is tempting, and I am seriously considering it. The bottom line questions for me are again, 1) will a 800 and 7D set-up be noticeably quicker on birds and...

C'mon, you know you want the 200-400/2.8 with the flip-in teleconverter. All in!Cheers,Rick
  12. Camera Topics For those that jumped ship and changed systems...(contemplating)

About 4 years ago I purchased my first camera system, the Olympus E620, not really sure what to do when I walked into a camera store. I wanted to go from a point-and-shoot to a DSLR. I also was...

Yep, that's the one. Looking forward to it and hoping to get lots of shots. If you go please let me know and we could meet up. From all I've heard it's a great festival.

    Wildlife Re: Painted Bunting

Thanks...I took the EM1 and also the E5. I used the EM1 for this shot. I paid a guy $800 for 2 1/2 days of guiding. A little steep, but he knew everything and it was comfortable to be in the hands of...

    Wildlife Painted Bunting

A painted bunting from my Florida Trip at a stop at a little nature center near Palm Springs (New Yorkers talking about the market behind the photographer not pictured). This was my main goal to see...
  16. Landscape Re: Photographing Birds mid-day: Lots of Sun, or Clouds?

Yes, tough call. I always seem to prefer sun to get catchlight and more vibrancy in the feather detail. I have flexibility, so I might just change it to that. I'll check with the NWS again tomorrow....
  17. Landscape Photographing Birds mid-day: Lots of Sun, or Clouds?

    Hi all,

I've been photographing birds for a while, and typically I like as much light as possible. But then I got to thinking if sometimes clouds could help, assuming we are not talking about...
  18. Camera Topics Re: EM1 + Big Tuna&2x tele& autofocus = meltdown and an order of an E5

Thanks so much for the tips. I do own the 70-300 four thirds lens, but can't see spending on another lens in the same range. I appreciate the INFO button tip, that should work. The auto focus on the...
  19. Camera Topics Re: EM1 + Big Tuna&2x tele& autofocus = meltdown and an order of an E5

Thanks a ton - I'll definitely give that a go and see how it does. The E5 (again) arrived today too, will be interesting to compare when I'm out next.

    All the best,
    Paul

Travel locations Photo Ops in Key West

I'll be taking a vacation to Miami in a couple of weeks. Mostly it's for bird photography and I have hired a guide, but I have one free day I was planning on driving to Key West from Miami Beach. I'm...
  22. Camera Topics Re: EM1 + Big Tuna&2x tele& autofocus = meltdown and an order of an E5

Thanks for the tips. I'm wondering though do the settings matter on RAW which I shoot? I did put them in but only have been out once and didn't have the chance to chase birds in flight, just perched....

    Wildlife Re: Hawk Owls

Thanks...I'll have to tweak them bait. No sepia filter, just a "cloudy" white balance in Adobe RAW, and a "darken/lighten center" filter from Nik software. And though I should know this, what is...

    Wildlife Hawk Owls

Not sure what to think of these...I'm becoming very obsessed with sharpness. I think they are decent, but not sure how to improve. They are on a tripod at a pretty high shutter speed of 1/1000 and...
