    Sorry if I have confused - my exif reader uses the phrase Gain Control but I believed (from cross referencing it) that in the case of the 510 it is refering to GRADUATION from the camera...

    looking at the exif on your first 'test' picture you have Gain set to LOW - and that's what it's given you.

    reset it to NORMAL, or even high on a cloudy flat grey image like that, and try again.
