    Hi!
Was just about to send an angry mail to Oly about their pixelmapping not working. Had a dead one that didnīt want to be resurrected but after the firmware update the pixelmapping seems to have done itīs job. Iīm kind of dissappointed, I had all this frustration build up for nothing...
There is probably more to the updates than they say.
Does anyone know exactly what the pixelmapping does by the way?

    Cheers!
    /Kristofer

Pixel mapping is supposed to turn dead pixels back on.

I think this announcement is very good news for all Olympus 4/3 owners. Even though the update for the E-300 doesn't seem to be all that major, the important thing is that it sends a message that they intend to continue to support their "older" products even after newer models are introduced to replace them.

Second it, and everytime Olympus made a firmware upgrade is an improvement, not fixing a bug or design fault.

Pixelmapping maps out the stuck pixels so that they are no longer operative and no longer making inappropriate bright dots in your image.

    Ok, thanks E B.
Does this mean that if I shoot something light itīs dark by the dead pixel or is there some smart algorithm for this?

In the RAW data there is actually a pixel sized amount of vacant data. The RAW developer, or maybe the camera firmware itself, I'm not sure which, will normally interpolate from the surrounding pixel color information and you actually get an appropriate color at that location. In all the time that folks have been mapping out stuck pixels on Olympus cameras, I've never heard of a single one complain of the result. The only time that you should worry about it is if you have multiple stuck pixels that are located adjacent to each other. The camera can still map them out, but the resulting image will likely show some sign of degredation.
    Good shooting,

I am glad that Olympus is still supporting my E300. I do wonder a little about what it is supposed to do. If a person is shooting on macro icon I question that they should be using the spot meter. A spot meter is a glorious tool but the person better know how to use it or they could get into real trouble. I also wonder why putting the camera in macro mode would change the accuracy of the spot reading? I thought macro mode basically just picked certain F stop and shutter speeds. Seems this would have nothing to do with metering accuracy. Also seems that the average metter should the same way.
I will update my E300 today. When you update do you loose your frame count? Updates always make me nervous.

Quick answer... No. Frame count remains. I updated yesterday evening after the frustration of getting the lame Master software to recognise the camera. The update itself was quite smooth.

Here's a link to the Oly site:

I updated my E-300 and one of my lenses. But for some reason it won't recognize that one of my E-1s is connected. Guess I'll have to seek advice on that one.
Appreciate what we have, instead of worrying about what we haven't. Enjoy what is, before it isn't.
