Default Black and White with Color

I took this image of a thermal spring and converted it to a black and white image and then restored a single one of the original colors to the b&w image. I posted a full color version of the thermal spring earlier here:

It's amazing as usual. I looked at the color version and can't believe that beautiful blue sky. You are truly gifted.

Impressive. I need to win a lottery to get time to try neat stuff like this. VERY tastefully executed.

Thank you. Actually, it didn't take any time at all. I was just playing with software and this image just happened as a byproduct.

Thank you. I'd like to believe you, but then I look at my images and immediately come back down to earth.

    Default Hi Bob....

Very nice image, I think I like this a lot more than the original. Nice job on the PP. Keep up the fine work!

Hmmm. I'm not usually a fan of this technique, but I like this. It has much more impact than the color version. If you brought out some color in the large dark rock, it might look even nicer. Or not! Just a thought.

I never would have thought of treating this shot in this way. Great idea!

Well, I've got to agree with you. Personally, I don't much like B&W and this is the first conversion I've done in the last year or so. This isn't the result of any artistic vision, I just happened to have this image in front of me when I was toying with B&W conversion techniques.

    Bob,
Beautiful shot. I would have liked to see the entire picture in black and white and maybe play around with the contrast instead of adding back in the color, but I still like the effect.
I happen to like B&W but a lot depends upon the original image. I had taken a photo course years ago and he had us basically only shooting B&W. Working with it does tend to grow ones appreciation of the work/talent it takes to get a really good shot.
I have recently tried my hand at converting some shots of flowers to B&W and then just bringing back the colors of the flowers. Some people I have shown them to loved it and others were not impressed. Oh well, to each their own.

Well, it depends a little on your backgound. I go way back. When I was doing most of my shooting in my early years, I couldn't afford the extra cost of color film and prints. Everything I did had to be in black and white and I was envious of all the folks who could shoot in color. As soon as money was no longer a limitation, I happily switched to color and never looked back. Even now, I tend to associate B&W with a loss of creative options because of that early experience.

Thank you. I'm not planning on hanging it on my wall, but I'm going to keep the technique in the back of my mind just in case it proves useful sometime.
