    Default Problem with my E-330

    Please advice...

I was at an Olympus roadshow yesterday and I shot some nice photographs with the 90-250...but on viewing them at today..and EEK!!!!!

I did not link as an image due to the size. Please click here to view the file.

This is the EXIF details for that picture.
    • File size: 346230 bytes
    • File date: 2007:03:25 21:20:15
    • Camera make: OLYMPUS IMAGING CORP.
    • Camera model: E-330
    • Date/Time: 2007:03:25 13:37:43
    • Resolution: 800 x 600

Apart from the lines I am personally amazed at your ability to handhold that length and speed ( unless they were tripod mounted) and also amazed at the lack of noise for 1600iso. Also very nice colours, must have been a fairly dark situation.

Are they jpg straight from the camera or raw conversions?

if JPG was the case , is noise filter turned on.

Sorry, but I dont have any ideas , except that maybe they are a sort of banding from the high iso and relatively long exposure. Were you using live view as well? (just thinking out loud that the sensor was getting warm)

    Hi

Thanks for replying. The lens was on a monopod. hence it's possible to hold.

The shot is taken in SQ and uploaded without any processing. LV is used and if you say the sendor is getting hot, maybe. That particular shot would be about 15 minutes into the set of shots taken.

This attach is from a fresh startup. I shot this when I arrived at the roadshow with the 7-14mm fish eye. Have a look.. the banding is there. This is taken without the LV and the sensor should be cold as this is the 2nd shot taken.

This is the 3rd shot taken

    http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/P3255003.jpg

Do you own a E-330? if so, can you do a test shot if it this happen on your camera.

I too have found lines in my high iso shots with the 330, I assumed I had underexposed them.
Now I have gone back to the 300 for high iso shots. It maybe more noisy but atleast that noise can be taken care of with noise reducion software. I can't get the banding out of the high iso shots with the 330.

Hi Johnmcl7, the banding becomes more prominent when the bqackground is lighter and out of focus. hence a portrait shot will reveal the banding lines in the out of focus plain background and foreground.

Hi JimBarnaby, I don't really understand you posting. Are you also getting banding lines like me? if so, can you post a picture up? or you can send it to me.

Thanks for the help. I wish more E-330 users can help conduct this test. The service center in my country says mine is an isolated case.

Hi John, Try a subject on the armchair in the foreground but towards the window. oh forget to add, aperture to full open. think with a deeper DOF the banding may not be seen.

BTW, the subject can be the back or even the arm of the chair. thanks for helping.

can't see the EXIF details. is the speed below the 1/50? The 2nd picture do display very slight banding in the background. The banding becomes more prominent in my E-330 when the speed is lower.

It's not the lens as it appeared on the 7-14, 90-250 as well as the 14-54.

Here are two examples at 1600 and a few attempts to use noiseware on one of them. I'm sorry for the large files but the smaller versions don't show the banding.

Yes Jim, it's there in the first 3 pictures. Not so noticeable on the 4th.

Have a look at Johnmcl7's last picture. There is faint ones there as well.

Could this be the sensor? Anyone with the E-400? Suppose to have a similar type of sensor but with higher pixel.

    Both shots were
    330
    1600 iso
    f 8
    7mm
The first one was at 1/320 and the second was 1/250 shutter speed
    ESP metering

Like I said the 300 is noisier but the 1600 pics clean right up, I cant use those from the 330 above.
    Jim

ps whats amazining is that I was able to walk around a mall taking pictures of the decorations.

No but I have read a few post where others have called and even sent their 330s back in to no avail. It seems not everyone sees it and it may be a jpeg only thing. I haven't tryed it since in raw. Maybe now that its been out awhile Oly has come up with a fix.

I rarely shoot higher isos, even at 400 I lose alot of detail using noiseware.

It's there even in RAW. I tried that. So it's not a problem with the JPEG compression. Olympus service here still does not acknowledge that there is a problem. and worst still they are trying to sweep it under the carpet.

This banding will appear when you switch to the Digital Image stabilization and start shooting in low light. We cannot control the ISO setting when it's in that mode. So what is Olympus gonna do about that?

If from John's picture, then even the expensive L1 shows the same banding. So how?

I'll run up a few prints in the morning on the second shot, if it doesnt show up in a 6x4 I'll do a 8x10 and then a 13x19.

I'll let you know the results tomorrow.

It does show up on prints. I printed mine on a Xerox color laser(C525A) and the print was given to Olympus Malaysia when I handed it in for "repairs".

May I know which part of the world did you purchased your camera? Maybe it's regional?

I don't know... maybe I'm just not enough awake yet but I fail to see any 45 banding in John's images. All I see is some more noise in the L1 image but I can't see anything similar to the banding that Jim and Blu showed - not even in his 330 shot.

Maybe I am a bit more or a skeptic.. I downloaded them and had open with paint shop pro X. the 45deg lines are there. not as prominent as those of mine and Jim but it's there. The ones on Jim's E-330 is even harder to see hence I asked him for the speed setting. The EXIF details were not included in the picture.

No, the E-400 uses a Kodak CCD sensor - the E-330/L1/Digilux 3 use a Panasonic cmos sensor of some type. The E-410/E-510 both use a 10MP Panasonic CMOS sensor however.
