    Default Should I upgrade

I own the ZD 35mm f3.5 macro lens and have an opportunity to "upgrade" via eBay to the ED 50mm f2 macro. Starting price on the 50mm is AUD$500 compared to a shop price of $800+ here.

It would seem on paper to be a no brainer - I would appreciate comments from those with experience of both lenses.

    Thanks in anticipation.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. What will the new lens do that your existing one won't? How much will the image have to be enlarged before you notice the difference in sharpness or other lens attribute? How many times will you make that size enlargement? I am not much of an equipment person and feel that the kit lens from my E-300 does a fine job.

All that being said, I do own and use the 50/2 - perfect for portraits and eBay shooting.

Do you use the 35 as a macro lens, or as a general-purpose prime that can also shoot macro?

I own both 35 and 50, and hardly take any macro photographs. I prefer the faster focusing (everything's relative...) and longer focal length of the 50, plus the faster aperture frequently comes in handy. It's not the best low-light lens, though, because of the reciprocal shutter speed guideline.

I don't use the 35mm much now that I have the 50, but it's still my lens of choice when I need a true macro shot, want a short-tele panoramic, or if I just want something light on my E-300.

I see from your other lenses that you're no stranger to the heavier lenses, but might you still want to keep the ultra-light and ultra-small 35?

The biggest difference when we talk about MACRO lenses is that
    35mm is 1:1 and 50mm is 1:2 lens
so 35mm lens provides double the magnification then 50mm lens.

Another thing to consider is your working distance. The 50 may give you more opportunities to photograph insects and bugs etc. that might take flight if you were too close with the 35. Of course, if flowers are your thing then the 35 may be better with higher magnification, then get the EX-25 to use with a "normal" lens if and when you need more working distance or a different perspective.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm looking for a longer working distance as the 35mm focusses very close to the subject. The longer f will also work well for portraits and it is a faster lens. Also my ring flash fits, as it is same thread diameter.
