    Default Which Flash

Hey wedding shooters, or anyone else. What flash units are you using for your E1 and/or E500s?

I am used to using manual flashes like the Sunpak 383 Super, but I kinda wanted to know what others use for weddings and group shots indoors. Thanks.

sog501 says it all. Since you have 383's substitute them for the 285H.

Thanks everyone. Now a new question. Could you replace the 50 with a 36, or would it not have enough power?

The only reason I ask is because I have only one wedding left on the books. Then it will only be outdoor and studio stuff left. I really don't see myself using on camera flash much after this wedding.

I may just say to heck with it and drag my lights to the wedding if I have to.

Power isn't really the problem with the FL36, it's the slow recycling time that's kind of annoying.

Personally I'm now looking into the metz AF58-1o, which should be released soon, not that you have any benefit for it (too late?).

I used a Metz 44AF-4o which worked pretty well. I've also used the FL36 which also held up pretty well during a wedding and group shots. Apart from the recycling time, which is actually not very important for wedding formalities.

Thanks. I might just give that a try. How slow of a reclycle time are we talking? 2 seconds, 8 seconds?

For a full discharge or FP discharge you can count on 6-8 seconds for the FL36

If all you're worried about is this one wedding, you'll be fine. Been there, done it. The recycle time is a mild annoyance... But, shoot available light as much as you can anyway. It makes for beautiful shots and it's unobtrusive.

Oh, but just FYI, there's an FL-50 up for sale on another thread. Doesn't look like a bad deal at all... If my wife wouldn't beat me over it I'd have already bought it.

    Good Luck!

I think it's time to start a club of men who can't buy gadgets because of their wives.
oh well, at least I can point to most men here and tell my wife "see, I'm not the only one! it's in our genes!"

Thank you all for the advise. I may just buy the 36 and deal with the recycle time. I assume it works on both the E1 and the E500. I'll go double check that before I buy one!

I did one wedding - may never do another, I was a busy camper.

Used the FL-50 with a pair of Oly CR-V3's. Recycle times were quite good, and I got almost 400 shots before they finally gave out. And that was making liberal use of the Lumiquest 80/20, so the FL-50 was going off at high power.

I did notice that when I reloaded with alkaline AA's, recycle times became longer. And don't waste your money on rechargeable lithium ion CR-V3's. They don't put out enough voltage for the FL-50. You get one shot, and the flash goes dead.
