Default What is the point of the Samsung GX10?

I know this is the 4/3 forum but I find people here are pretty clued up about other camera systems.

I was reading a review of the Samsung GX10 and I'm left puzzled as to the point of it - it seems to be pretty much identical to the K10D aside from a slightly more modern menu interface and not being compatible with the Pentax grip. Even the price seems to be pretty much identical from the sites I've looked at.

There are other cases where one company shares parts with another - we have the E-330 and L1, Fuji have the new S5 Pro which shares many parts with the Nikon D200. However despite the E-330 and L1 sharing many parts, they are fairly different cameras and the S5 while sharing many of the D200 strongpoints its sensor and some other changes make for two different cameras. Leica rebadging Panasonic cameras is closer but the Leica name is a very desirable one for cameras which is definitely not the case for Samsung where I'd say Pentax is the more desirable name.

    What do you think?

I suspect the point from the Pentax POV was survival. Some cash up front and some modest royalties. From the Samsung POV, the ability to enter the DSLR market in a more prestigous way than otherwise, and the ability to learn from one of the best, most knowledgable manufacturers in the world. (probably not all that different from Panasonic's reasons for putting Olympus and Leica into a deal)

Samsung is a big name in electronics in certain markets, a name that is likely to be more familiar these days to a lot of folks than Pentax is. Putting that name on some of the cameras is a way to sell more of them than if they were all badged as Pentax models.

I do see that aspect of it although in general Samsung devices do well for their looks and styling - if Samsung had 'jazzed' up the exterior going for a more stylish look to it then I could see the benefits.

Default In a few reviews, the reviewers have actually...

stated that they prefer the Samsung version over the Pentax version - now go figure. In fact, in one case, the reviewer compared the GX-10/K-10D as a Ford/Mercury scenario, and he liked the GX-10 to the more luxurious Mercury version (whatever that means). So who knows. I mean to say we're collaborating with Panasonic, but at least both Oly and Panny are releasing different models - specifically in appearance, and also in performance levels.
    Have a wonderful day!

There seems to be very little in it though - the Pentax has a grip and more readable fonts on the buttons, the Samsung has a more up to date menu system, that's it as far as I'm aware?
