Hey, Cosmo, this looks very interesting to me. I can't see from your profile, though, where you live. I am in the US midwest, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. If you need someone in my area to participate, I would be happy to get involved.

Sure, if the camera will travel within the EU, the customs will not be a problem anymore

Sounds like fun so I join ! Count France in ! ^^

But custom (not even taxes) if the camera comes from outside the european union may be really a problem : I had bought cds from the USA last christmas and customs kept it for about a month before contacting me (asking for taxes)... I had to send them back a copy of the bill... So the whole thing took about 6 weeks before I actually got the parcel (once it was in France of course)...

Wouldn't it be easier to just send a memory card ?

we don't have to keep the same focus length but i think that solves allot of the logistics especially with the customs in here (Israel) and not to mention the mail.

if you want to send something around the world i think Tylwydd had a great idea of sending a memory card. extreeme III is very cheap now. so 8GB one with 7 RAW images per person, should be enough for about 30 people.
we can copy the images and upload them in case the card is lost. furtherer more the chances that the card will be stolen or damaged is smaller then the camera's.

but just in case you got israel and jerusalem in particular at your list now.

    thanks for the great initiative.

It seems like purpose is about to getting lost... Why send anything at all?

Another idea would be to send around something very cheap but original - like a mascot for fourthirdsphoto.com. and then the participants are taking photographs of the mascot in their home countries. We could have a common Smugmug archive developing showing its journey.

    Cheers, Jens.

    PS.
[irony]You can count me in but but I'm too lazy to fill in the customs declaration. So you can just skip me in the send list and I will make a photo-montage of the 'mascot in Sweden'... [/irony]

Sending the camera is a great idea! Sending anything else will not be the same. It would be great to see if the camera survives all that sending without damage and will not be lost somewhere on the way. This would be definitely a great fun. But what fun will be on sending the memory card? This is just not the same..

It's a fun suggestion, Cosmo. Whatever the final plan turns out to be, I think you can count me in, but I have to say I like Jens' mascot idea the best so far. It would provide some continuity to have the mascot in every image; we could all use our own cameras; the images could be uploaded from each location as they are taken so we could enjoy checking the gallery on a continuing basis; and I can see the potential for a lot of creativity and humor. Not to mention that a mascot would be lightweight and easy/cheap to send.

    How about "Four Thirds Kitty"?

Ok this thread is getting long so i did not read the whole thing!

Olympus' Ebay site is selling referb E300s and they are selling for about $200. I am not sure what you are getting for a P&S but I think this would be a good way to go.

I am in, I will PM you.

What a great idea. If you wish to send it south to Tasmania, I would be more than willing to do my bit. I'd do my best to capture a Tasmanian Tiger for the cause. A Tassie Devil anyway!

Why not approach Olympus to see I they could see their way clear to donate a camera & card.

One group (details escape me) did this with an OM-1n a while back and recipients were allowed to put other lenses on if they wanted to. Has anyone got the details?

It'd be nice to set up a blog for the camera maybe - so we can track its whereabouts every day! I'm in (Hull, UK).

The mascot idea is already doing the rounds of the world. It's a plush toy (bear) that is sent around the world and the idea is to photograph it in various places/poses/situations etc and then the shots are posted on a site for all to see. The holder has about a week or so and then the bear is off to the next recipient. It's been going on for a while and friend in Australia participated in it last year, but I can't remember the name of the site. Some of the shots were very amusing and it also involved getting complete strangers into the act.

I'm happy to participate and take whatever shots might be of interest in this part of the world. Taxes aren't a problem in Oz when it comes to used gear and/or anything under AU$1000.

    Cheers

    Ray

I got the original idea from a Rangefinder forum and they call it "Pass the RF". I like the mascot idea as well. As long as it is Olympus four thirds related. I will work on an updated list and post it soon. Thanks everyone so far we have 20 signed on. I hope to have the camera mailed out a week or so after the deadline. I will look around for a camera.

I'd gladly play the game, but I'm about to move twice in the next 6 months so I'll pass. However, my opinion is that a memory card would be better, if only for mailing and tax costs. Sending anything bigger than an envelope from here costs at least $15 and whenever I receive something of value from out of the country (Switzerland isn't in the EU) I have to pay a "customs inspection" fee of $20, even if there's no tax to pay!

Why not a xD memory card? It's tiny and only Olympus cameras can use them!

I first thought you had to handle the camera to the next person in stead of mailing, but we can just do that if appropiate.

Hello Cosmo, the original idea of sending a single point and shoot camera for us guys on fourthirdphoto.com is still a good idea. I really like it. However, if it is change and by that i mean sending a Xd card instead or a mascot, you can count me out.

Olympus around the globe, not mascot or card or body around the globe. Your idea is good and low cost, just don't let the others destroy it with their other ideas and how expensive they think it is. If they cant afford a cheap 20$ bill for a good idea that brings a community a little closer, well they can just stop replying this thread that is all ready to long. Stick to your plan, others will come.
