    Question Any AF experience with E-510 + 90-250 ?

    OK,

I just pressed the "Buy" button for an E-510 and I am planning to do the same for an ZD ED 90-250 as well, soon.

However, before doing that I am curious wether there is any focusing speed advantage with the new E-410/510 bodies over the old ones with that lens. I understand from Julie's reports that the AF system of the new cameras is much improved but it doesn't come to its full rights when using the ZD 50-200 (classic).

So, now I wonder if anyone (of the few lucky owners here) have been able detect any significant improvement in AF speed, low-light AF, or C-AF when the ZD ED 90-250 is used on an E-410/510 vs. an older E-camera?

    Cheers, Jens.

I know a few people with the 90-250 and I know several with the E510 and E410 but I don't know anyone owning both other than Ray but I am not sure if he has posted anything about how the E410 has been on the 90-250.

I know he has been very happy with the camera for editorial work.

My experience, I was toying with the idea of selling my 50-200 but then I got the E510 and you really do notice a difference. Faster AF, Much Faster FPS and the C-AF seems to be improved as well.

I shot a bodybuilding competition, for the most part I was shooting with the E300 35-100mm f2 combo and my assistant got the E510 with the 50-200. I also used the setup and the E510 really does bring life back into my old 50-200. I was shocked at the speed.

Looking forward to the SWF version on the new pro body!

Olympus is starting to catchup on the speed side of things but its still very accurate...

I got my E500 back from Olympus yesterday and I noticed a big difference in speed when I tested it with the 50-200. Much slower.

I used the E510 and 14-54 for my wedding receptions and its fantastic in low light. Much faster and my shots are dead on. Since in got it my keeper rate is much higher in these kind of low mixed lighting conditions.

Something I still need to do is put the 35-100mm f2 on the E510 and head off to my usual sports shooting location to see how it holds up! I always found that bodies without grips could not push the big glass of the 35-100 or the 150mm f2. I was always told by Olympus that this was a AF issue and not the lens so expect improvement in the new bodies. The 35-100 is faster on the E510 for general purpose use but I still need to test it out in my indoor sports settings.

    Hope this helps!

I forgot one thing. Olympus Canada is going to send me the 90-250 to play with so as soon as I line up a couple of events I will let them know and I will be able to test the 90-250 on the E510. Not sure when you are looking to buy the lens but I hope to test it in the next month.

Thanks for this re-assuring report Kelly. I'll pull the trigger for the 90-250 as soon as possible - depending on the estimated delivery time. I Need the lens before mid-September.

    Please report back!

Sorry I didn't open this thread sooner, but I never thought I'd find my name in a thread about the coveted 90-250!

Jens, like you said I have found better C-AF with the new 40-150 as opposed to the 50-200 (which seems to work about the same as on my E-500), but I don't think most people are having the same experience. As I have said a few times before, I'm thinking my 50-200 may need servicing, or maybe I need to try it with my new battery (my old ones don't take a full charge anymore) like Pete suggested. I think I am going to contact Olympus and see what they have to say.

I wouldn't let my strange experience influence your decision in any way. Pull the trigger!

    Tanks for the input Julie,

I'll get that lens no matter what, because the E-510 will hopefully not be the camera for very long anyway, just curious of what to expect for my immediate future.

    Cheers, Jens.

I've also noticed improved AF speed over the E-500 when using the 50-200. With the 300/f2.8 however I don't notice any difference. Fortunately it's pretty quick anyway Maybe these very big lenses need the additional power from a grip to achieve maximum speed
    Best wishes

I have used the E-510 with the 90-250. Really the E-510 is a bit small for the lens, but it focuses quick. The IS works very well, and it is really a dream to use. The IS seems to draw lots of power when its on all the time, but I still got a lot of shots from the camera.
But over all I would say that with all the lenses I own the AF speed is highly improved.

I found the AF using the E410 and 90-250mm just as fast as with the other lenses. I don't think the wee battery would last a day like the E1 and grip does, but there is no doubt that Olympus has made great strides with their AF.

    Cheers
