    Tony,

So I to shall also enter the parade of clue seekers and crystal ball gazers.

I wonder if there is a clue in the dialogue by Yasuo Asakura ?
Given that this web content was all specifically developed recently to coincide with the release of the new cameras, it was therefore likely worded completely with this in mind - as opposed to some old historical quotation that would prove to be incorrect in its context of use.

In Episode 3 he states about their original intent and the release of the 5MP E1 in 2003.

"The first and most fundamental goal we set was the achievement of the highest possible image quality . . . . At a minimum, image quality had to exceed that of 35mm film. . ."
    His next words are
" . . . and in the near future it had to equal that of medium-format film"

So I wonder - would you put that in print if you had no intention of doing this in the "near future", in his case knowing exactly what specs are coming in the new E-Pro ?

So I would like to think this means medium format image quality in the
    E-Pro.
How many MP would that be really ? - more than 10MP thats for sure - 15MP as a minimum, preferably another 5-10MP more.

My simple logic says if 35mm is roughly 9cm2 and medium format say 6x4.5 as an example being 27cm2 and the 5MP 4/3rds format E1 satisfied their requirement to exceed 35mm, then we should be looking at maybe 15MP to equal medium format.

But then that would be reading too much into so little - wouldn't it ?

    Cheers Rally

    Hi Rally,

you are right that it is quite bold to give that statement at the time being. However, those thoughts were published long ago in an inteview with several key persons for the development of the E-system so it could just as well be repeated as true history.

It is interesting that Asakura back then even dreamt about large format quality in a long perspective.

I have had those words ringing in my head since I first read them back in 2004. In fact, that convinced me that that the ZD lenses (at least the Top Pro) had to be designed to higher IQ specs than what we could appreciate then (with the E-1).

    Cheers, Jens.

That would seen a huge technological leap and, to my mind, more of a risk than they need to take when they've, apparently, got the new 10mp sensor so right.

A Risk? Hum... doesn't that sound like what Olympus has always done? SSWF That was a risk - IS - wobbly shakers? Those are risky parts in my book -
A whole new format, etc. We will see - but I think that the next camera will be quite surprising.

I think we are all going to be pretty impressed with the camera when it arrives. With every new release Olympus seems to include something new. After four years of development, it should be pretty special.
