    Default Sony α700

Sony α700, In chinese only, at a Taiwan web DCVIEW.
They guess the sensor is the same as in Nikon D300.
With dust prevention, not supersonic wave, they use anti static Indium Tin Oxide coating on low pass filter, plus sort of shaking device.

    Default Impressive feature set

Just from looking at the pictures. Zeiss lenses doesn't hurt their cause at all either.

It sure is hard to know how the industry is going to shake out. Pannasonic seems to be stumbling along in the DSLR arena and Pentax is still a question mark to my mind but I have suspected all along that Sony would eventually come on very strong. This camera may be their first outstanding effort. We shall see!

    Best,
    Oly

From the specs being discussed on the other forum, it looks mostly comparable to the recent 40D/D300. I'm sure it'll be a nice camera, and I'm sure it'll sell reasonably, but on paper at least, I don't see much to tempt the average buyer away from the big two.

Then again, on paper, my E-1 is obsolete, but I'm happy

Sony is only going to be a factor in the consumer mass market because of their size and their marketing muscle. I predict they will quickly develop a well deserved reputation for poor quality and longevity in their cameras. From the 80's until this year, I have owned a Sony walkman, a component CD player, a video projector, and a video camera. I have had quality control issues with every single Sony item I've ever bought. They either don't work out of the box, or they break and wear out prematurely. Sony specs products well, but they build their products for price, not durability. Maybe the camera division will be different, but I doubt it.

Same here - the last three major pieces of Sony gear I bought all had problems within a year. Definitely not the Sony of years past. The days when I would pay a premium for the Sony name are in the past now.

Hate to sound dubious on the a700, but the a100 looked a lot better on paper than it turned out to be in reality. Not bad, but not great, a camera designed by buzzwords. The photos I saw out of a100's just didn't thrill me the way a good E1 shot does. That is, after all, why we buy these things, isn't it?
