    Default Beginner/Entry Level Questions?

I just got my E-510 camera and I am sure a lot of my questions are probably of the beginner level such as do people use the "scene" modes or is that there for beginners...that type of question. Has there ever been thought to creating a section just for beginners?

Just wondering if I should start asking my questions in the technical forum or photographic techniques.

    Thanks...

    Tom

This site is unique in that everybody here really wants to help everybody else succeed as photographers.

Look at the various forums and see what sort of questions are being asked there. As well, read the forum description and see which one best matches the questions you have.

Unlike other places, we don't roll our eyes or snigger. Everybody was a rookie once and we all remember our first tottering steps. So don't be shy, ask away and we'll see what we can do to help.

I generally shoot aperture priority (a habit from the OM-2n days), but I started in photography with a fully manual camera. I like having control of the various aspects or elements of the exposure. That is one of my primary reasons for wanting to get into a DSLR, rather than a P&S.

If you use the scene modes, be sure to pay attention to what settings the camera is using, and the results. The scene modes wil take charge of the technical details while you concentrate on the art, but you need to begin learning the technical side as well. In this manner you should begin to learn what affect aperature, shutter speed, and ISO have on the image.

I've only tried the scene modes a couple of times, and their settings were not what I would choose myself (wide aperture when I felt a small one was called for or vice versa). The scene mode I used didn't seem to allow for any tweaking either.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I will just ask my questions in the most appropriate forum from now on.

    Vonbonds,

I suggest reading your manual, getting a book or two, and practicing. I use aperture priority the most, but will switch to manual when I'm in my home studio.

    Good luck and happy shooting,

Mode choice: they call it "priority" for a reason.
    • Most of the time my first concern is controlling DOF and sharpness, so I use A mode.
    • If I have to worry about keeping the shutter speed above a certain level (handhold/long lens/low light, or action), then I will use S mode.
    • If the meter is fooled by the scene, I use A or S with exposure compensation, but
    • If the meter really has no clue (like with a manual flash) then that's what M mode is for.
    • P mode, as far as I can tell, is when I can't spare the concentration to pay attention to the camera, and I want to take snapshots with expensive gear.
    • If you ever get a "legacy" lens, A mode is invaluable, and you should give thanks to Olympus for allowing it. I'm told that some other cameras will only do M mode if there's no electrical connection.

Scene modes -- honestly I think they can be really useful, but I never use them. They're similar to P mode except that they dial in certain preset settings and limits. Problem is, I haven't studied up on what all of those changes are, and if I don't know what a mode is going to do to my photo, I'm not very inclined to try it
