    Default 14-42 and 40-150 firmware 1.1

Olympus announced on March 27 firmware update 1.1 for the two kit lenses 14-42mm and 40-150mm. With the new firmware, the two lenses can be used on the soon-to-be-released E-420 with its "imager AF" (contrast AF).

This according to the Japanese DCWatch site.

    Hokuto,

Nice find, but too bad it seems the original kit lenses are being neglected.

The E510 model has the same processor TruePicIII as E420 and E3. So the contrast detection AF and face detection is possibly on E510 with a new firmware the same way as width E420.

TruePicIII has enough power for support the contrast detection algorithms.

Well if the E-510, why not the E-3 as well? That might be nice.

But before updating the firmware it clearly says it's not possible for those cameras... I doubt they'll include it in cameras firmware, though that would be VERY nice.

I've seen this question elsewhere, but: Does the new firmware allow contrast focusing on the L10? If it does, that would be a good sign that the Panaleica lenses will also contrast-detect on the E-420. If not, it would imply that Olympus and Panasonic took different approaches and are probably not interchangable in this regard.

I'm assuming, of course, nobody has tried this yet. If they did, point me to the thread so I can sulk away in shame.

Any photograph I've taken that is the least bit respectable is probably sitting on Flickr. I also talk about them occasionally.

I don't think so. I asked about this, and all the answers I have received so far is its not possible. I don't know if that is because of the deal with Panasonic, or if its because of some hardware difference. But I don't really know I just doubt it. Really I doubt that it has to deal with Truepic III, more the core hardware of the camera

Well it seems that the old kit lenses, are forgotten. Really I see this from 2 ways, #1 - Old technology is hard to keep up to date, on the other hand, they should support those lenses.
But I think that it will go the way of the E-400.

I think you're Tony and it's a shame. The original kit lenses have served me well for nearly two years. I guess that's the risk of old technology in the digital age!

I don't think so tspore, I have written many firmwares. There is probably no need any new hardware for contrast af, the live view mode is O.K. on the E510 and grafical cpu is truepic III (it is maybe a bit slow for USM glasses, i joked) - the contrast af process is too slow for that cpu/gpu. But we will see that Olympus need to sell the new camera (E520, E3plus) and we must replace the older one (E510, E3) for that bussines.
    We will see...
