Default Free software w/ dodge and burn?

Does anyone know of any free programs that give you dodging and burning tools? Lately, almost every time I edit I find myself wishing I could just "darken a little there" or "brighten a little there." Will the gimp do it? Maybe an older photoshop version that's available for free?

The Gimp will give you a whole lot more besides. It's not particularly intuitive but it is very good considering it's open source. There's help around for it as well.

When you download the Gimp, also do a google for "grokking the gimp" - a free Book that gave me a few good head starts when using the Gimp.

Paint.NET will also do it. It doesn't have as extensive a plugin collection as the The Gimp, but the UI is, on the whole, significantly more intuitive and it doesn't make an uncontrolled mess of windows.

Any photograph I've taken that is the least bit respectable is probably sitting on Flickr. I also talk about them occasionally.

What are you currently using for post processing? It may be possible to get a plug-in to help.
