Default Olympus Announces the E-520 and the 9-18mm Lens

On 05-13-08 Olympus Announces the E-520 and the 9-18mm. We have enclosed our full camera preview, including an exclusive interview, and first impressions.
I have been playing with the E-520 for a couple weeks now, and must say that I am really enjoying the camera. I cannot at this time share images from the camera, but I should have a Firmware 1.0 camera soon.
For more info please go here.
It is a worth while upgrade over the E-510, and very similar to the E-420, but with a few extra features, the most notable are the three IS modes, and the underwater housing.

Hey right on, looks good and I like the looks of that 9-18 for $600. I wonder how the 9-18 will hold up against the 7-14? Probably no contest.

Ahhhh...sounds like they read my mind and dreams. I cant wait for the E520 and the 9-18mm lens even though I will have to sell a kidney and half of my liver. I think I might try to sneak an extra $1500 into our mortgage when we buy a house this summer as well.

I will expect IS3 to feature in the next E-3 firmware. I for one was actually missing this IS mode recently, when I was doing panning in the portrait orientation.

    Ok Johannes,
First did you see in the flash interview - sound clip #4
    http://www.fourthirdsphoto.com/e520/

Basically in the shot below I panned with the camera horizontally, Well if I were panning by a football player I may have the camera vertical, and it would help me have the same effect as the car image, even though the camera is vertical instead of horizontal.

    hmm,

these releases make me wonder what photokina 2008 will have in store for us..
the E420 and E520 won't be updated that fast

    Maybe an E3 successor/update?
Or the double-digit body everyone is talking about

hopefully more lightweight lenses though! the 9-18mm certainly has my name on it

Seems the surprises and concentration are on the lenses (Pancake, wide zoom) more than a new body in the past .... wait and see if there is a E-xx with something inovative.

Question Re: Olympus Announces the E-520 and the 9-18mm Lens

    And I just bought a 7-14!
Seeing the size of the 9-18, I just can't help thinking that I am on the wrong track equipment-wise. E-3+12-60+7-14+50-200 add up a lot of weight, I'm not so sure anymore that I need that kind of performance... If the 9-18 delivers (and I see no reason why not) maybe I would be better off with a E-420 + 9-18 + 40-150mm

Tony, very informative audio interview. What is the size of the body it ? Looks the same as the E-510? Cheers Pete

Hmmm, I wonder if I can get my wife to bend before the trip to NZ next year? Probably be after the 530 by then :-)

One disappointment - do you think they'll ever move articulated live view to the consumer models? Resurrect the E-3xx

On the plus, that new lens looks sweet.

    I share the same thoughts.

A little disappointed but don't think it was meant for E-510 owners to upgrade to, more like 410 owners.

I don't have the need for wireless flash yet either. I will but I would lean to the E-3 just because its so awesome.

$600 for a UWA lens that's aimed at entry level, not so hot price. $400-500 maybe. Definitely want to see samples though.

I think that it is a fine announcement as a whole, I did all my speculation earlier this year, It would be ok to see a E-3 replacement, but I would really like to see a super high end camera in the system. - Please note I have no insider knowledge, and if I did I wouldn't say about it.

Hey Jon, I agree, the small light weight kit is very, very nice, and now complete. (when the 9-18 hits the store) For the majority of people, I don't think you will need anything more.

It seems to me that the E-3xx series is dead they never sold well at least now

If you are happy with the E-510, then no real reason to upgrade, but I find the E-x20 to have much better images than the E-x10 series. a bit faster, better liveview, wireless flash, Cool buttons, etc.

$600 for the 9-18? and now street price is only $675 or less for the 11-22 and that's a Pro lens and a whole stop faster wide open?

    wth

budget/consumer grade should be about $300-$400 max

I'm not sure the $75 difference is worth the 2mm with 1 stop lost (granted UWA are mostly for landscape and usually don't care if used with a longer exposure)

heck, the sigma 10-20 maybe a better choice, i think those are about $400 street no?

would be interesting to see a comparison between the 9-18, 10-20 and the 11-22.

the real question for me is, is the 520 a worthwhile upgrade over the 510(which I just own for a few months so far). I doubt it.

    Currently have a 510 with 14-42, 40-150, 70-300 and Sigma 30mm.

Down the road I was thinking of getting the 12-60 (maybe the E3+12-60 kit) then I can sell the 14-42 and 40-150. for me I don't think the E520 would be worth the money for me. maybe whatever Olympus have in store to replace the E3 would also work

I too wonder about what Photokina might bring, but after the PMA "bust" when Oly only introduced li'l digicams I'm not counting on anything from the slr side. That said, I strongly believe there will be a bridge camera, and that the E-3 will remain unchanged until mid/late 2009.

Once nice thing about the new lens: it takes filters! And, they didn't add yet another filter size to the lens lineup

I agree we will have to see how the IQ of the 9-18mm is but really it is a whole different game lens than the 11-22mm You are entering the world of Ultra Wide angle. Distortion will be a big deal, as well as optics.
I personally guessed it would be around $400-500, but it does have the ED element so I guess that is their rational for the price. All in all I look forward to seeing what they are going to do with it.

the real question for me is, is the 520 a worthwhile upgrade over the 510(which I just own for a few months so far). I doubt it.

Personally though I used a E-510 for a couple months was not all that impressed with the Dynamic range. The noise was good, but I was constantly wanting more from the camera. It is a good camera, but I think that I may buy a E-520 we will see.

I am still hoping for a real high end camera, a lot more room for the system at the top, not much in between. But that is just my opinion.

Is the optical viewfinder pentaprism type an upgrade, and/or different from the E-420 viewfinder? I assume it will be brighter... I bet that 3.5 fps will be closer to 4 fps continuous shutter as it's rumored in the 420. So glad to see more good body options although I guess the E-3 will remain my only hope for weather-sealing.
