Default First shots with new 70-300

I just got my 70-300 today thanks to capt3450. I have a section of my yard set up to feed and water birds and I can shoot out my back door. All these are shot hand held at 300mm then cropped for posting only. Man, I love this lens!

Sweet shots! It's an amazing lens for the price... can't wait to see more of your photos with it, opens up a whole new area of photo opportunities! I like the second blue jay shot best, and the character exhibited by your mocking bird.

Thanks Rob & Mike. I couldn't wait to unwrap the lens when it came in. Thes 70-300 is going to be glued to my E-510 with little exception.

Rob, I see you have the FZ50 for a second camera. My V-LUX 1 is the same thing with a little difference in the software. I love it and just couldn't part with it when my Olympus came in. I have to use it for my Granddaughters Ballet because of shutter noise of E-510.

That's smart... and I have found with that articulating screen and quiet shutter, the FZ50 is the perfect tool to catch children just being themselves! I wonder when Oly will come up with a quiet shutter for dslr... they are innovative and leading in technology like that.

I am tied between the 150/2 with 2x, the 300/2.8 or the 70-300, I know they all perform on different levels but the cost differences explain that.

Out of about 20 bird pics, how many others would you say you lose due to slow focus?

Naturally the two prime lens you mentioned would perform better but I couldn't start to afford either lens. I really prefer a good zoom lens. I'm disabled and limited to very short distances from my truck (10-30") so the zooms really help.

I was surprised that I had not problem at all with slow focus. I was shooting on a bright day but as I use the lens more I'm sure I'll find it's limitations. I did some practice shooting in the house last night and it was a little slow in a few shots but not as many as I would have thought. I wouldn't hesitate buying it again for a minute.

I have the 50-200 2.8-3.5 and thought about the 2x but the size and weight was the biggest factor in buying the 70-300. It's perfect for me to carry around and will most likely be my main lens.

Ron, Great shots and glad you liked the new toy. Lighter and easier hand-held than 50-200 f/2.8 isn't it? Enjoy the new toy and post more picture (hint: great for macro shot as well)- Thinh

Thinh, Thanks for a great lens. I don't know why you sold it but it is definitely my gain.
