Default E-300 - conversion to IR

    Conversion of e-300 to IR

    by stefan Hübner

After I started the thread of converting an e-410 to IR and linked it in the
german Olympus- forum ( http://oly-e.de/news/showthread.php4?group=e.e-system ), someone asked me doing this with his e-300.
Being interested in doing such modifications I said yes and the camera was send to me .

Here are now the countless difficulties I had to fight against

    1. Opening the case .
20 screws are fixing the case!! 6 pieces for the flashbracket (extern) and 2 for the intern flash ( here you can see the 8 places ) .The
clip and bracket of the extern flash must be taken down .

3 hidden screws for the adjustable range

    to lift up the range

There are 9 screws left :

    -2 at the card subject
-5 at the bottom (2 for the battery subject : left /right)
-2 at the left side : 1 you can see, the other here :

At this time I was able to lift up the rear side and got to see this :

    2. Removing the display , for there are 2 screws underneath and there is one screw, which fixed the plastic
placed around the USB- and tv-connection and had to be detached .
    3. Disconnecting the mini-flat cables . 10 of them are clearly to see. Nr. 11 is on the left side under the edge of the board .

    4. The board and the sensor are one part. For removing I had to unfix 9 screws, as you can see here ( only 8 to see ).The red ones
are for the board, the blue ones are for the sensor .

    5. Lifting the board . the board is piggypacked at the bottom-board and there fixed with the 9th screw .

    6. Folding above the board the CCD is now visible .

The next steps of the conversion – the exchange of the filters - are the same as seen by the e-1 or the e-410.Look here for the E-1 :

An then it’s time to get all together .

At least the warning not to do a conversion like this on your own !!!!!!!!!

By trying this conversion, the warranty of the producer expires .Therefore certain steps
of this thread aren’t discribed .I don’t take any liability for the accuracy, completeness
and the consequences of trying this conversion .

    best regards, stefan

    Well done Stefan!

The E-300 looks like a very complicated camera to assemble (and de-assemble). I wonder how small a profit Olympus made on that model?

Thanks for the look inside and the explanatory text.

    Cheers, Jens.

I probably shouldn't post this on a 4/3rds forum but I have just purchased a Sigma SD14 - whole conversion to IR can be done externally and is easily reversible. The SD14 is really cheap and plentiful right now and I have converted the lens mount to take Leica R glass (also relatively cheap). I use an E3 and an E510 as my main and backup cameras and didn't want to try to convert either to IR so I needed to buy a new camera. I guess I could have gone the E400 route but the SD14 is cheap and much easier to convert plus with an adapter I can use the Leica glass I buy on my E System bodies.

i suspect thats very true Jens
to keep costs down cameras need to be designed for manufacture
or else bring out the robots
ever seen those films of Mercedes and BMW robots installing car dashboards, quite amazing.....

    Hi!
I'm trying to make the same conversion in order to use the E300 for astrophotography, but I cannot see the pictures anymore. Is there any way to have them back in the post?
    Regards,

Unfortunately, these attachments appear to be deleted, probably during a server move by the person who previously ran this site
