    Default Assignment #17: Cars

Nice truck. It looks like a tug-boat.
    - Paul Gross, on having a Hummer drive past during a sound check.

Cars are today's mythology. Our various societies and cities are built around them, where we live and work is determined by them, and they control the shape of our lives is in fundamental ways. They can be seen as mechanical marvels, perfected sculpture, self expression, freedom: or as many of the seven deadly sins in vehicular form. Pride, envy, gluttony, sloth... they consume resources while they open up vast possibilities.

    They're also pretty.

Simple or complex, we all have relationships with cars. For this assignment, decide what you think of cars and make the photographs that show your opinions.

Happened accross some old firetrucks on display and snapped a lot of photos. Funny this was my favorite. It is of the front grill of one of them, cropped, turned 90 degrees and I played with it a bit to make the chrome look like I wanted it. Maybe it's just me, but this is now an 8x10 on my office wall.

Here's my first attempt at an HDR image. It's a shot of my 1970 Falcon that is going through a complete ground up restoration/modification. The car is almost ready to go in for media blasting prior to paint.

I've finally worked through a backlog of photos and have a few new ones that I took for this assignment. Three weeks ago.

And one old photo that I've dug out again:

    Otto,
I like this treatment very much. This would make one heck of a garage calender shot.
Would you mind sharing a basic technique to arrive at this?

    Thanks

    Thanks Jim,

I like the effect that HDR images can display. The technique is fairly simple. A series of shots are taken at one, or two, exposures above, and below, a "normal" exposure. Then these are generated into an HDR image using HDR software. Then the rendered HDR image is put through a tone-mapping process to arrive at the final result. This can have a fairly "normal", or "surreal", look depending on how the various adjustments are made in the software. I use Photomatix Pro from www.hdrsoft.com , and you can download a fully functional trial version to try out. There are several other software offerings as well, but it seems Photomatix Pro seems to be the most popular. There are now a couple of good books about the HDRI process now available as well.

    Hope this is helpful.
