What a bummer. I got all hyped up (improved focus for F2 lenses) because the classic bikes are on this weekend. Oh well, MF is more reliable than Oly C-AF anyway, but one lives in hope and sillier things have happened.

It seems some sites have definitely jumped the gun and posted this without actually checking which is irritating as I went to grab camera and USB cable only to then find it's not actually released. I'm particularly interested in the improved F2 accuracy.

Hang in there, everyone. It'll undoubtedly be there. We've all been shooting more or less successfully with v1.2. The enhancements will be nice, but it's not like v1.3 will make an otherwise useless camera suddenly useful. It's just a few days more to wait.

I have, however, downloaded Master 2 in anticipation of the upgrade being available.

Actually this is a big one for me - my camera has focus inaccuracies that Olympus have not fixed after two repairs, I've been waiting for months for this firmware as I'm really hoping it will get my camera working as it should

+1 on that for me. "it's not like v1.3 will make an otherwise useless camera suddenly useful" OH YES IT WILL, if CAF works, and my f/2 lenses will focus in, ah "low light" -- Duh... which is what they are FOR. My E-3's are very nice snapshot cameras when used in ideal conditions. I'll look forward to it becoming a professional caliber, multi-capable, machine -- as it was originally advertised.

The F2 lens C-AF focussing where you point it would be nice!

Sorry, guys... didn't mean to get anyone riled up... I've used AF now since 1992 and only trust it 50% of the time anyway. I've always considered it inherently unreliable technology, so i've not found any of the issues reported across any of the brands to be a big deal. In those cases that AF just doesn't work, I use MF. But, then I also recognize that I'm probably one of the few folks here who seriously worked with 4x5 press cameras... even though they had become obsolete even then...

I guess I figure it's a miracle that this stuff works half the time!

The annoying fact is that my older 4/3 cameras can focus consistently and accurately with the same lenses that the E-3 cannot.

Wow, shocking to read about all of the differences people are having! I would like to see the AF move faster when pushing around the glass but I find C-AF to be very accurate and I am shooting at F2 ALL THE TIME in some nasty lighting.

My grips have been a huge pain in the ass, 1 in for 3 fixes and 1 for 2 and they still suck! then out of the blue they start working better! Its very strange!

The 14-35mm f2 could use a tweak for low light work but it does work very well. WAY better than the first copy of the 14-35mm f2 Olympus sent me to play with before it was in stores. (not sure what firmware it was on.)

Will this make a huge difference for us, I sure hope so but if not I will toss my grips back and ask for new ones and keep working.

I was thrilled with some snowboarding work I did at -46C, the E3 & 35-100mm f2 just rocked it out.

Downloaded, installed and working great at this point!

I have 2 E3s side by side with the sames settings in C-AF and the one with version 1.3 clearly has a faster FPS rate.

With some more testing I still feel the C-AF with my 35-100mm f2 is snappier but I won't really know until I get to shoot some action! Maybe I will go play in some traffic!

I will be taking my laptop with me on location, if I like the firmware, I will install it on my other E3.

I will be more interested to see how a long day of shooting action is with the Grips!!!

That's good to know. I don't use a grip nor do I have use for the change to the AF target selection function so the C-AF speed and focusing accuracy are the only two changes that potentially apply to me. I never had a problem with AF accuracy of my SHG lenses so it will be interesting if I can detect any differences after this firmware update.

Default Link for firmware upgrade dos&donts?

    hi
seems the new firmware has been released
my e3 currently has firmware 1.1

Being my first time and having previously read threads where cameras have seized up during a faulty upgrade process, im naturally pretty nervous attempting to upgrade

does anyone have any link describing the Dos & Donts of the process? (im reading the olympus faq btw)

do i need to upgrade it to 1.2 first or does the ver1.3 incorporate the previous upgrades?

    thanks

Updated my E-3 to v1.3. I am noticing a small improvement in the speed and decisiveness with which it acquires AF lock with the 14-35/2. Accuracy may be slightly improved as well, but it's hard to tell. I think there is a slight improvement here, but not really sure until I start taking pics of people at events and other types of situations where you gotta "get the shot". Seeing if my keeper rate improves when the pressure is on is the true test...

Later...early evening and I could not resist this undemanding subject, nevertheless....cat walking towards me, 10 shot C-AF burst. One out of 10 was not quite focused on the eyes, but the other 9 were, dead on. Now the surprising point to me was that I had not finished resetting to my preferences, in a hurry because of failing light, and all 11 focus points were in action as per default. I was quite surprised though the head was not far from central for most of the shots. I have found before that this setting gave inconsistent results. Anyway, a minor success, a much more demanding Astro in full flight tomorrow. I may just start with 11 points.....but which dynamic setting, OFF (which it was), LOOP or SPIRAL...all too much!

After going back to re apply my settings, I think I need to spend a bit more time with the manual and go thru some things again I had forgotten just what you can configure on this camera.

Adi, at the bottom of the link explaining the upgrade features, there are three links, each describes the process using whatever Olympus software package you have:

Update Procedure using Olympus Master / Olympus Studio
Refer to the following website to update the firmware.
Update Procedure using OLYMPUS Master 2.x (OLYMPUS Studio 2)
Update Procedure using OLYMPUS Master 1.x
Update Procedure using OLYMPUS Studio 1.x/OLYMPUS Viewer
v1.3 was just released late yesterday. Probably only Olympus tech support can answer your question adequately since I doubt anyone else has tried going directly from v1.1 to v1.3, but I have to assume that v1.3 includes all of the v1.2 improvements and adds the new ones. At least that's the way the info is written and most firmware updates work.

I'm going to start my update as soon as I finish this post, but my recommendation to you would be to upgrade to v1.2 first rather than experimenting and potentially bricking your body. My guess is that a direct upgrade to v1.3 would work just fine, but it's only a guess.

It only takes a couple of minutes to upgrade firmware and is a very simple process, so you can upgrade to v1.2 and then again to v1.3 in the time it'd take you to write your question to Oly tech support.

    Happy upgrading!
