Default CDAF focussing firmware update for 12-60/50-200 SWD

I read on another forum that there is a planned update for the 12-60 and 50-200SWD to make it compatible for CDAF focussing. Anyone hear anything about this? Is it confirmed?

I haven't heard any such thing. As a matter of fact, I was under the impression that the SWD focusing mechanism was basically incompatible with CDAF.

The source of this information was from this article:

    http://theonlinephotographer.typepad...-you-want.html

The article mainly speaks about the release of EP-1 camera, and contains interview information with Akira Watanabe, a manager at Olympus Tokyo...

"As an aside, Mr. Watanabe also mentioned they were preparing firmware updates for the 12–60mm ƒ/2.8-4 and the 50–200mm ƒ/2.8-3.5 SWD to be compatible with contrast autofocusing."

Again referenced later in the article,

"That would be a matter for concern if it wasn't for a small thing—the lens officially doesn't work with Contrast AF at all. You'll have to switch to the SWD version for reliable results when they update the firmware."

I asked Mr. Terada last time I saw him a few weeks ago about if SWF lenses were capably of becoming CDAF compatible, and he said that they were, and as they work out the firmware they should be posting that. I think that as E B said it has been a bad internet rumor that SWF lenses could not be CDAF compatible. But I wasn't given a time line, or anything like that.

    Default Bummer!

Doh I would have bought an E3 kit, with 12-60swd lens and flash. Oh wait, with price drop I can still get a better deal!!

Anyways it's good to hear that rumor clarified. Because I'd really love to have my 14-35swd lens be able to CDAF. since I didn't buy the E30 with the 14-54 mkII as a kit.

Short order wish list in order
    1. 50-200swd
    2. E3 kit (highly considering now with drop in price.)

Exclamation Re: CDAF focussing firmware update for 12-60/50-200 SWD

Thanks for clearing things up Tony!

I don't use liveview all that much, but I could see CDAF being quite useful on the 12-60mm lens and the E-620 as my travel setup...

Now I'm even more tempted to sell my 14-54 (old version)...

It's too bad they can't update all the older lenses with CDAF... I could see it being awful useful on the 30mm/50mm macro too.

I wouldn't mind if they implemented CDAF in E3 too but I guess we're out of luck there.

Not that I need it (I don't use live-view), but I always suspected this. I don't see any reason why focus motors affect how the AF system in the camera (CDAF/PDAF) talks to the lens. It makes prefect sense to me that ALL lenses with the proper firmware should work with the CDAF cameras.

And I think it's in Olympus's best interests if they do so as well. In the future I may actually consider mFT as a backup FT body. Working AF with pro lenses should be expected.
