Default The Sound in the Brush (1 IMG)

I'd gotten up before daylight so I could drive to a higher elevation vantage point in the hope of catching some nice morning light for a landscape. I misjudged my timing and was still driving when morning arrived. The sky was completely overcast and looked likely to remain so and my morning excursion was turning into a failure. I was hungry and desperately in need of some coffee so when I saw some large boulders that might be suitable for a table and chair only little distance from the road, I parked the vehicle. As I was unpacking my stove and food I heard a rustling noise in the brush. I ran back to the car and grabbed my camera which had the 14-35mm lens mounted on it. I scanned the brush and couldn't see a thing. Slowly moving in the general direction of the sound I heard it again and then saw a half dozen wild turkeys. They were clearly aware of me but I was able to gradually close the distance between us and I was able to capture this image before they finally outdistanced me and I returned to making breakfast, and more importantly, coffee. I think this was the only image of interest I captured that day.

    Camera: E-3
    Lens: DZ 14-35mm at 35mm
    Shutter speed: 1/160
    Aperture: f3.2

Great image and story! They might not be the most attractive birds, but seeing wild turkeys always makes me happy. There's just something about them that is so cool.

Heh. So, your best image of the day came before coffee? Sometimes we must suffer for our art.

You did a good job of stalking with the 'short' lens you had mounted.

Thank you. Actually, my stalking skills aren't nearly as good as the image implies. As you noted, I was shooting with a short lens at 35mm. The turkey only looks so close because I cropped out about 2/3 of the image. The original frame looks like this:

The extremely high quality of the 14-35mm images allow even extreme cropping which is not easily detectable even with the wealth of fine detail in the image.
