    Default E-520 any good?

    Hi,

I recently bought an Olympus EP-1, and I think it is great! However, one thing the pen is not good for is taking picture of kids, AF is just to slow.

I also have a Canon 40D with 17-55IS F/2.8 which I really like, but I'm thinking about selling it for a used Olympus E-520 with 14 - 54 mm f 2.8-3,5. It would be nice being able to use the same flash and some of the same lenses...

I see myself mostly using the pen, but want a camera with good autofocus and autofocus tracking for taking pictures of my kids. I also would like to use a flash with TTl without having major shutter lag (as with the EP-1).

Any E-520 users with kids who would like to share experiences about this? Should at look at another E-series camera or lens?

I don't have a 520, but my 500 is plenty fast enough to focus, as is my E-3. Whilst you can use the lenses from the 520 on the E-P1 with an adapter, you can't go the other way.

Thanks for replying! Do you find you have many shots out of focus, or the AF to be too slow?
Do you know if the 14-54 F2.8 is faster focusing than the kit lens?

I just used the 12-60mm and found that it was as fast as I need. I had a Canon 40D too and I sold it. I just sold my E-520 and got an E-620 but I haven't used it that much yet. (Because I bought a Canon 7D to replace the 40D; I gotta have movie mode)

LOL, good to see I'm not the only one who needs to buy new stuff...
I would like to be able to use one system, I would like it to be just micro four thirds but that's not possible with the AF-speed and shutter lag using flash right now.
What was the reason for selling the E-520 and upgrading, and how did you think it compared to the 40D?

I live in a university town and the local craigslist has want-to-buy ads from students. Usually they want to buy a current camera at a good price, and I know that there is always a better one soon to be sold! I sold the E-520 for $320 and bought a demonstrator E-620 for $399. I sold the 40D for $750 and bought a new 7D, I need movie mode for work:

I use my E520 w/ 50-200SWD for taking pictures of my nephews and niece, in good light, it's fast enough to track those wiley kids around. I have tried a 14-54 and it seems generally faster than the kit lens. I would think the E620 should have a faster focus motor according to its spec sheet. Although I am not sure and haven't tried one thoroughly. All in all, I am satisfied with the focus speed of the E520, although indoors, I use the AF assist of my FL36R.

    Cheers,

    Roy

    Never used 40D, but I have E-520 and 14-54 together with FL36r and FL50r.

I find it acceptable (as far as focusing speed goes) and much faster then the kit lens, but on the other side I thought that Canons have one of the best AF speeds ?
I think it's cheaper to buy a flash for your Canon, then to sell the system and go into E-520 without knowing if it's satisfactory ?
Another thing is you can use Oly flash on your Canon body albeit only in Manual mode.

Thanks for the advice. Seems that the Olympus 520 I was considering buying has been sold, so I think I'll sit on the fence for a while waiting for a "sports/pro" micro four thirds camera.

Gengh--Is there something about the 40D that isn't great as far as fast focus? Or are you just looking for a smaller system? I understood that those Canons generally are as good as it gets at fast focusing for sports and stuff.

No, I think the 40D is great, it does everything very nice. However, buying the E-P1 made me think that I could sell the Canon, and buy a cheaper, used Olympus and have some money left over after selling my Canon gear.

I see myself using the E-P1 most of the time, but when I need a camera that can react faster and track faster I could use an Olympus DSLR.
Looking at the used prices in Norway, I can buy an Olympus E-520 with 2 kit lenses (standard zoom and tele) for less than I can get for my Canon 40D body.

I'm thinking about waiting for a while, perhaps there will be a micro four thirds camera that can do everything I would like available in a while.
