Default Nelscott Reef Classic #6 (8 images)

I had the pleasure of shooting this 6th annual surf contest on the Oregon coast on Nov 2. I was on an 80-foot cliff, and the reef break was about 1/4 mile offshore. Waves were 35 to 50 foot faces on 20 sec intervals, so full wave heights were often obscured by nearer waves. Light offshore breeze created beautiful ehukai. There were Gray whales playing in the surf zone at the North edge of the reef. The weather was clear overhead, but coastal fog/haze drifted in and out, making some images pretty soft. I used E-3, Bigma, some with EC-14, heavy tripod, and gimbal head. These are OOC jpgs, cropped and contrast adjusted in Sagelight. Iso 400, f/8-9, 1/1000 sec, on average.

    1-2: Successful rides
    3-5: Falls
    6: Double rescue
    7: Gray whale flukes
8: Smoking sunset waves after the contest (12-60)

Nice set Ken; those wipe outs look bad, especially that 4th one. Good thing they have the jet skis to come pull 'em out....

Thanks, Don. Yes, they were stacked so deep and close that occasionally we could see riders on three successive waves at once.

Ken, that 4th crash is part of a sequence of about 8 shots I got, showing him catching air, then loosing it and pearl diving (#4), then coming off the board and getting pounded by the tons of water. I talked with that surfer at the banquet that evening, and he broke an eardrum in that wipe-out, and was not able to enter the semi-final, after qualifying for it.
