I bought a battery/charger set from B&H Photo a week or two ago. They've got those in stock now, they're out on just the battery for the moment.

I also got the charger/BLM-5 set from 17th St Photo via fleabay. I have not seen real Oly or clone BLM-5s on that site yet. They will come for sure, but for now, that seems to be the only way to get extras. I have plenty of BLM-1s, but I hate to carry multiple chargers on a trip for the two flavors.

Everyone is out of the battery and apparently not just for the moment. They've been out of stock at Oly, B&H, and Adorama ever since I bought my E5 in December.

A Google search yielded a clone provider:

    http://www.bestbatt.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=blm5

and at $26 I ordered one. It's rated a bit higher 1800 mAh rather than 1620, but that measures capacity and not voltage.

When it arrives I figure I'll see if it is totally pin compatible and double-check actual voltage just to make sure.

    Hmm, dunno bout that.

When I placed the order for the battery and charger set, they had standalone BLM-5s in stock. I decided I wanted a second charger as well, that's why I ordered the set instead.

Bob. please let us know what you think of it. I'd also like to know if it's Japanese or Chinese.

Sure thing Ted. I ordered it last week and the company is in New Jersey (I'm in PA), so it should be here this week.

Ted, it arrived with the afternoon mail. It looks good!

Identical physically, it has the extra connection and may in fact be the same manufacturer.

I checked voltage against the BLM-4 and it meters the same.

My BLM-5 has a mate now...

Godfrey observes that the original Oly batteries last longer than the clones, but at half the price of the Oly the one you found looks good.

I could probably look this up somewhere, but I'm being lazy. Are the BLM-1 and BLM-5 interchangeable in application? I understand that the BLM-5 uses a different charger... And for those of you who are using the BLM-5s, is there a significant real-world difference in battery charge life?

    Thanks!

The BLM-1 and BLM-5 are indeed interchangeable and in fact Oly has dicontinued selling the BLM-1 (presumably because of the Japanese safety regulations about charging Lithium batteries).

If by "battery charge life" you mean do they last longer in use in a camera, they do - their capacity (energy storage) is 8% higher (1620 mAh versus 1500) but they seem to last longer in use than just 8% more. And that clone that Bob found has a capacity of 1800 mAh.

If you mean can they take more charge cycles or have a longer shelf life, it's kinda early to tell. None of us have had one for more than a couple of months or so.

Just affirming: yes and yes. The BLM-5 lasts significantly longer in both the E-5 and E-1.

The aftermarket BLM-1s I had were from BestBatt.com. I've had good luck with other batteries sourced from them (for the Panasonic L1 and LX2), but these two didn't last and weren't worth the money.

That's OK unless you're one of us folks who purchased an E-5. If you did, buying an extra charger doesn't make a lot of sense just to get the battery.

True enough -- but given how slowly the charger works, a second one will be mighty useful at times.

I always like to have two chargers. That way I can have two batteries charging simultaneously. Beyond that, more batteries only.

I just got one from the Oly store (using the 10% off and free shipping code from registering warranty). But I just checked the website again and they are now showing out of stock, as well as the charger/battery combo.

Talked to Olympus help recently. One of the questions they answered for me concerned the BLM1 and BLM 5: The BLM 5 must be charged with the new white charger. The BLM1's can be charged with the new charger but not vice versa.

Another thing I have wondered is what the charging current is for the new charger? I usually bring with me two BCM-1 chargers in order to fully charge the battery grip in about 2 hours. I'd probably keep on using BLM-1s instead of changing to all BLM-5s if the new charger is slower than the old one.

I wouldn't worry about it. The only thing that will happen is you won't be complying with the new safety regulations but putting your BLM-1 on a BCM-1 is probably no longer compliant either. Obviously Olympus can't and won't to tell you that you can switch black and white.

Just to let you know that the BLM-5 will charge on an older BCM-1 or BCM-2 charger, but you can't charge BLM-1s on the new BCM-5 charger.

So, what you say is to carry on using the BLM-1s and BCM-1s and not bother with the BLM-5? That's what I had in mind also.
I don't care about the new regulations, I just want to have batteries and chargers that work as smoothly as possible for my shooting style,

Typically, in the winter, I carry 6 fully charged BLM-1s with me and if I'm travelling, I have two BCM-1s. Introducing two BLM-5 in the pool of batteries (I want two of the same in the grip) would mean that I'd have to replace both of the chargers as well but if the BCM-5 is charging much slower than the BCM-1 - it would be a bad move.

So, my only worry is if the BCM-5 is charging as fast as the BCM-1?

    Cheers, Jens.

You would not need to replace both chargers, because the BLM-5's can be charged on the BCM-1 or BCM-2
