    Default E5 Viewfinder Inoperable

I was in the middle of shooting a wedding ceremony just yesterday when the viewfinder went dark on my E5. Luckily the E30 filled in the rest of the way.

The camera can focus and take the picture, but I cannot see out of the viewfinder, only in Live View. This means the mirror is stuck, correct? Either way, I haven't been able to resolve the issue.

Any ideas before I send off to OLY repair? Also, does anyone know of any best practices when dealing with repair? I was hoping they'd have a "working pro" priority program. I have an E5 already rented for next week's shoot, but that can get expensive if the repair takes a long time.

    Thanks,

    Steve

As per the above, it catches a few people.

It is to make sure you get correct exposure during live view so no extra light gets to the sensor through the eye piece.
If photographers stopped worrying about the short comings of their equipment and started worrying about the shortcomings behind the viewfinder, there would most probably be a marked improvement in image quality.

Don - the jokes on me!! That was indeed the issue. I feel a little dumb. Thanks for pointing that out and saving me from feeling even more stupid after sending out for repair.

I think we've all done it, not stupid at all.

    AF was a giveaway
If it can focus, it means mirror is in proper position.

It's funny how many people have had this scare - I guess you don't expect integrated VF shutter at this price point.

I don't shoot landscapes and I'm usually moving so quickly handheld that I had never looked for that feature. Yes, auto focus had me perplexed. I guess I'd rather be a little embarrassed here than facing costly repairs and a rental. Perhaps if I'd read the darn manual!! lol

Thanks for the help and for letting me off easy on the mistake.
