Default Is your 150mm F2 loud when focusing manually?

Just bought a used 150mm F2. When manually focusing, I hear a very loud clicking/ticking as I rotate the focusing ring. Is this typical of the 150mm F2?

When I had one, yes. It sounded like a vacuum cleaner in AF mode, so the mf was consequently very loud as well.

    Thanks for your input Charles.

I'd like to get a concensus amongst 150mm F2 owners, so all you 150mm owners, please contribute your opinions on this subject, so I can have piece of mind.

What mode? CAF, SAF, MF? What camera?

MF mode. I was testing on an E-1. Would the body make a difference on the sound the lens's mechanism in MF mode?

The 150 f/2 is indeed louder than others I have when manually focusing, but I wouldn't refer to mine as 'very loud'... just more audible than smaller lenses.

If you're looking for peace of mind forget it! That only comes with death.
If you're looking for a piece of mind, I would be happy to loan you a bit, but that would be a fate worse than death!

Following up--I tried mine on an E-5 and E-M5. It whirs like a kitchen appliance in SAF and CAF and purrs like an old cat in MF mode. There's a soft rattle in MF, but it's considerably quieter on both cameras than either autofocus mode. Interestingly, on the E-M5 the autofocus whirs while getting focus close, and it switches to the clicks while fine-tuning focus prior to lock.

The difference in battery size (and the available power to drive the focus motors) between the two seems to not affect performance or sound.

If someone would send me one to use for a while, I'd be happy to offer an opinion about the noise level.

On my E-30 it's much louder using AF then MF. Same on the E-M5.
I would not call it loud. But I wouldn't call it quiet either.

You would perhaps expect it to be almost fully quiet in MF, but since the MF ring is not mechanical but electronic you still hear the motors.

Does the focus-select switch on the side make any difference ?
Switching from a distant target to a near target using AF, this 1st motor noise of the lens seems louder.

My guess is that all the drive-by-wire (non-SWD) lenses make some noise focusing, but the larger lenses make more due to the larger motors required to shove the bits back and forth. My 150 is noisier than, say, my 11-22. This seems to be an issue Oly is addressing in 4/3, as the lenses need to be quiet to not pick up focusing noise shooting video. Small, newer model lenses like the 45/1.8 are quiet and blazing fast. By comparison, the likewise small but older 20/1.7 Panny is audible when focusing.

    Cheers,

    Rick

My 150mm is pretty quiet. My 35-100mm on the other hand, ......electric cuisinart comes to mind. No issues in four years, though.

Enjoy the lens. I think you are fine.
