Default Gray Whales at San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California

I just returned from a Gray Whale expedition with Dr. Bruce Mate of the Marine Mammal Institute of Oregon State University. We left aboard the Royal Polaris from San Diego and returned 9 days later. We did some island hopping on the way South, and spent three days in the warm, shallow lagoon, where these whales give birth to their calves, free from sharks and Orcas. After a few weeks, the females mate and take their calves North to the feeding waters of Alaska and the Arctic seas. These photos were taken with E-5 and 50-200 SWD and 12-60 SWD, as well as TG-1. Hooray for waterproof gear! OOC JPGs, with minor horizon straightening, cropping, and sizing to 1200 dpi horizontally.

    Wow, incredible shots.

Every time I've gone whale watching, all I've seen is a small blimp somewhere near the horizon.

Cool photos of a great experience, Ken. I especially like the closeup of the whale spouting (#7).
