Default I've got a wonderful opportunity

WHOO HOOO!!!!! HOT DOG!!!!! DOING A HAPPY DANCE!!!!!
My wife and I and I drove around Ft. Stanton NM on the 19th while we were staying at Valley of Fires. I am a New Mexico history buff and I love old buildings. Ft. Stanton is such a unique place so, on a whim, I sent an e-mail offering to volunteer for a month (3/25 to 4/25).
Guess what???? I got an e-mail back saying that they had a place for our 5th wheel and would be very happy have me as a volunteer. I am so looking forward to it. We will be there until we need to go north to our volunteer gig at Steamboat Lake State Park starting on 5/19. I told them I had a maintenance background, so I hope that is what I will be doing. Can you imagine working and leaving your personal touch on a place like this?? It will be something special for me, I know.
But, I also know that some of you may be wondering what is wrong with me. Why get so happy and excited just to give away time and work? I guess I am just stupid that way. I don't care if all I do is rake leaves. I will be raking leaves at a special and wonderful place. It will also give me an opportunity to photograph and tell you the history of the fort. So, be prepared for it. The links below give an oveview of the fort.

    Brilliant! High 5!

I volunteered at Heritage Park here in YYC. Very satisfying.

I think you have every right to be happy about the gig, sounds perfect for you. Do you do any campground hosting? It seems like that would be right up your alley as a retiree running around in a 5th-wheel or does that take too much time away from other interests?
    Cheers, Dave

    Dave:

I am very happy about this gig. A lot of early New Mexico history is centered around Ft. Stanton. The Lincoln County Cattle War, Billy the Kid, the Mescalero Apache raids and prehistoric people also.

This is only our second summer as full-timers. The first summer we wanted to go and see. This summer we are volunteering at Steamboat Lake State Park in Colorado. I feel very lucky to get a position there also. It is one of the crown jewels of Colorado state parks. We will be there all summer.

    Mike:

See!! Old people are not useless.

I do have an application in for the federal park system, but like the article says, I will have to wait until some other old person dies.

Is it that hard? I guess things have changed over the years. At one time we thought about doing that, but have been too busy with family, etc.

When you say "volunteer" do you at least get a parking space free?
    Cheers, Dave

Yes, for the park systems, you get a free spot. With workampers and private campgrounds, it varies. Some are a free spot, some are a salary and a dicounted spot.
With Colorado, it is a free spot and aafter 40 hours, a year park pass. Most parks want 20-32 hours per week.

Nominally YYC is the IATA designator for the Calgary airport (CYYC is the ICAO). When I post from my ithingy, I abbreviate, so in this case, YYC means the City of Calgary. Heritage Park is a historical village in Calgary. See my gallery (sig) for some of the work I did for them and my Blurb book that they sold.

You're going to love the experience and the ability to get behind the scenes as a volunteer with a camera will be so great.
