Default Hawk Chicks Are Growing So Quickly --Swainson's Nest (III)

The chicks have grown so quickly --what a torrent of activity there must be in their bodies to change so in just a couple of weeks! Walked up closer to the nest when the adults were out hunting to get these shots.

    E-5, 150/2.0 & the 2X EC-20 tc, ISO 800, hand-held. Large cropping.

Good question! I don't have data for Swainson's, but do for Red-tailed hawks. One study done in the 70's found that out of 1,000 Red-tailed eggs & nestlings, 632 were alive at 10-12 weeks, the time of fledging/leaving the nest. At one year: 518. At 2 years, 218. At 10 years, 40. At 20 years, 4. Just one at 25 years. So, most don't live more than a few years.
Swainson's might be similar. They could also average less, because of the hazards of such an extensive migration: all the way to the grasslands of Argentina, a 13,000 mile round trip. (A few years ago, thousands of Swainson's died from pesticide poisoning down there.)

Thanks, Mike. The parents do appear to be very good hunters/providers.
