From macro to far away, probably the best bang for buck zoom that exists in this category.

The bokeh is indeed smooth. - It rekindles my concern that there may be something wrong with my copy. With reference to my photo of a Spitfire model above, I don't remember the heat haze being quite as it appears in the photo.
Could very well be heat haze. Airfields tend to give off a lot of heat during a hot day, and remember you're really zooming into it.
Best to try a picture of something else to see if your lens is OK.
