How to make sure a certain attachment is the featured photo?

When one attaches several photos, it seems that most of the time the first one does not show up as the featured photo that goes with the title. I never know which photo will turn up, and often it's the second, third, or fourth; seems arbitrary. Usually, I'm sure people would want the first one attached to also be the one that introduces the thread along with the title. I have tried to figure this out for a long time without success, so I guess I'll have to ask how to do it. Thanks.

Hay Ken,

I used to use the "insert in line" button after uploading images and then preview my post.

If necessary you can cut/paste to reorder them before posting.

Obviously I preferred my images appear near full size and not as an attachment.

Since I'm not a paying member anymore I can't use the attachment feature

Don, I can get the attachments to appear in the order I want, "in line," but the first one does not always display on the main page of photos. Thanks.

It was random. I have now made a little edit in the code, it should now select the oldest attachment (one that was uploaded first) as the thread icon.

Non-paying members can use attachments just the same as paying members, but the space limit is smaller.

Well, the whole idea behind using the attachments feature is to assure the images remain intact...

I just posted four photos (White-tailed deer fawn). It did not operate that way. The order was backwards (i.e. the one uploaded last turned out to be first and the feature photo). That's perfectly OK, if it will be consistent, operating that way all the time. Just so we know how it works. Thanks.

The photo uploaded first is the thread icon in the white tailed deer fawn thread. The thread icon is attachment ID 48048. Attachments in that thread are 48048, 48049, 48050, 48051, so it is the first one like it should be. It is also the first in the attachments list.

All I can say is that the order is very definitely reversed from the order in which I chose the images. The photo I selected first was what you ID as 48051, definitely the one I prefer (intended as thread icon); after that, I added the others. The one I selected last was 4808, the image where the fawn fills the frame. In fact, the order I intended did appear in my Preview of the thread. But when the posting came up, it was reversed. One would expect the order to be the same as what the preview displays, otherwise it's not really a preview.

PS: When finished uploading, I simply click "done." Does one need to click on "Insert In Line"? The meaning of that phrase is unclear: could be the sequence of the file #s, or something else, so I have not used that.

If you click on "Insert in line", all the images will appear in the message box and be available for cut/paste.

Clicking "Done" will result in the images showing at the bottom of your message as thumbnails.

I prefer the first method

I think you know how my photos have been appearing, practically forever, and I would call that being in the message box. If that's called appearing as thumbnails, fine, since I want separation of space between them. (To clarify: See Jim's great bluebird pics now: they have no separation, are all run together, no white space between. IMO it does not draw in one's interest. If that's "in line," then I avoid that.

And you can then add text between the images.

Don, Thanks for the cut & paste info.
Regarding hosting images elsewhere: I hope you don't mean they will all look like they are in deep shadows.
I have Zero interest in hosting my pics elsewhere.

Maybe you are uploading multiple attachments at the same time? This may be where the order reverses for you.

Also, if you open the attachments in a new window, and copy-paste the attachment URL, you can insert your attachment into a post like from any other website.

I do upload multiple photos at once, since many uploads work that way and since there are no directions on this site to say that one should not (If that's a problem, one would expect a clear warning to that effect.). I will try one at a time. But this does not speak to the issue of why the preview shows things to be in the correct order when it is not. I know there are lots of others that have had this issue. Anyway, I'll let this go and leave it behind.

I just tried uploading 5 pictures, they uploaded in the order I selected them to, appeared in that same order in the preview and also here in the post.
