How do you find the autofocus with the E-M1?

I find the autofocus to be slow, but accuracy was a bit of a problem until I started setting the autofocus to S-AF with only one central point. Now I am getting a lot more "keepers".

Another thing to remember that this is one very long lens. If you are hand holding the lens, you should try for a shutter speed of at least 1/1000 sec when it is fully extended. This means setting it to maximum aperture which has a very shallow depth of field. Accurate focus is critical.

A couple of weeks ago, the light was fairly good and the skies were clear after the rain had cleared away. I decided to go outdoors and play with the Bigma again. Settings on my OM-D E-M1 were as follows: Shutter speed priority, 1/1000s, auto ISO with a maximum ISO of 6400.

That looks rather good for a picture taken at 1000mmm equiv!

Up to about 400mm, the lens is surprisingly sharp. Between 400mm and 500mm, it loses a bit of definition. I think that I am going to have to set up a bird bath and feeder in my back yard so that I don't have to take photos of birds at the tops of trees. The other advantage would be that I could set the camera and lens on a tripod and use a slower shutter speed and a smaller aperture.

So far, all the photos which I have taken with the Bigma have been hand-held.

Hi. I just got this lens off of ebay with no hood. Google searches leave me ending up with the hood for the newer models of 50-500, which I dont know if the hood is the same or not. Could you tell me the model number on the hood ?

Hi Jeff,

I am sorry to have to tell you that there are no markings on the hood, except for "IN", "OUT" and "SIGMA".
